Leaping and Jumping Our 9 month old inherited jumping from her mother and leaping from her father. She is absolutely most HAPPY to jump up on the foot stool when playing ball and jump off when we throw the ball, or any other of her toys. If we're on the floor playing she will leap from one of us to the other. These are things she has grown to LOVE but we worry about there being some long term problems to her legs and joints from all this. Are we just being overprotective? :aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
If you have a small pup it can be dangerous to hip and knee joints. Any yorkie under 10 pounds to me is small cos I have only had 10 pounders and over. If your pup is 7 pounds or under I wouldn't allow all this leaping and jumping around as much as sweet lil girl loves it. |
If you pup is a leader and a jumper you need to have his joints checked by a vet to determine how solid his joints are. If he really loves that action maybe your should consider agility:D |
My youngest does it all the time and has crazy good muscles in her back legs. Sometimes it scares me some of the things she jumps off of but there honestly is no way to stop it. She doesn't have LP or anything so I just let her do it. There are several of us who do agility with our pups and its fine as long their knees are good. |

Oh my goodness this sounds just like my Yorkie Ruger. I sware he will leap & jump before you know it. He is 3 years and has always been active. I’m trying my best to discourage this, as you said, he loves it & that’s how he plays. My Vet checks his joints at every visit, say they are good, but...... as years go by. As I write this I’m having a ramp made for my bed. He keeps jumping till he makes it up on the bed and when I know he’s on it I will try & help him down. When I reach for him he will bolt off the bed. Like “Mommy I want to do this myself. My bed is 29” high & can’t find ramps that high. So, I hope the guy I got to build one will be ASAP. So I feel your pain and pray our Yorkies do not. |
I'd highly suggest that you help limit the amount of jumping as his bones and joints are still developing. I read that you should also limit the amount of hard running they do too when they're developing - something about their growth plates. Here are some articles with diagrams etc to get a better idea: https://www.puppyculture.com/new-app...-exercise.html https://pethelpful.com/dogs/Puppy-Ex...ch-is-Too-Much https://www.dogworksfitness.com/sing...ips-and-elbows |

How do you keep them from jumping! Molly will jump jump jump for me to pick her up...she just about can jump in my lap and shes only 4 1/2 mo old! She can jump on the bed, onto the tub. Have to close the toilet just in case. Shes like a jumping bean! She jumps off the bed something Max never did. So I put steps down so she didn't hurt herself but she still jumps onto the bed. |

It's hard to keep these crazy little critters down... Literally and figuratively! |

Ours have always been jumpers and climbers, and keeping them from injuries has been a challenge. With multiple yorkies we no sooner address one of them, reminding them that we do NOT jump off the top of the couch, when we turn around to see the other leaning over the gap between the other couch to examine something on the coffee table! Our youngest, Gus, is going for the Simpson family record...the other day he climbed onto the rolled arm of our leather couch and launched himself across the room to land on the adjacent chenille couch. Not only did we have to remind him that he should not jump, but also point out that he is only allowed on the leather couch! |
