Weeks old I am getting a new male puppy soon.I want to know if 7 weeks is to young? I thought 8 weeks was what people say. I lost my little buddy Kobe March 6th and need a new companion although Kobe could never be replaced. |
Absolutely YES, 7 weeks old is way to young. A reputable breeder will let their pups go at 12 weeks old. In this time the momma is teaching her babies Bite Inhibition, the ability to control the pressure of their mouth when biting to cause little or no damage, litter mates also play a big roll in this. Some puppies at 12 weeks old are using wee wee pads. Also 12 weeks old is less stress on the baby when it transitions to it's new owner. Years back 8 weeks old was the norm for getting any puppy, so was sticking their nose in their poop or pee if they didn't make in the appropriate area, hitting the dog when it did something naughty. It has been proven positive reinforcement praise and reward work out far better in training then hitting, sticking their nose in poop, and leaving a puppy with it's momma and litter mates until they are 12 weeks old is best for a well adjusted puppy. In some states it is illegal to sell a puppy under 8 weeks old. Only BYB (back yard breeders) or people that are not breeders will let a puppy go at 7 weeks old because they are tired of taking care of puppies and just want to get them out of the house and get money in their hand. Be very Leary of anyone wanting to get rid of their puppies at 7 weeks or younger. My advise is stay away from this person. I know you are wanting another baby, to avoid heartbreak seek out a reputable breeder that holds their puppies for 12 weeks. Good luck in whatever you decide. |
Indiana it is not legal to sell a puppy under 8 weeks old. |
A reputable breeder will not sell a puppy before 12 weeks. If they do it’s a huge red flag and normally means they didn’t do other things that reputable breeds do also so you could end up with an unhealthy pup. I would personally look for a different breeder. |
Hello and welcome to YT :)! I would absolutely *not* take a yorkie pup until at least 12wks of age - please trust me! They are so very fragile, tiny, vulnerable - and they younger they are, this increases exponentially! There are SO many developmental things and social learning things occurring btwn Momma and btwn littermates up to the age of 12 weeks -- that if you do take them before that age, your pup will miss out on that important learning as well. An ethical yorkie breeder will keep puppies until 12wks of age, that's the standard for a reason. You can also confirm that via the Code of Conduct for at YTCA.org - where #8 says: 8) All puppies leaving the breeders possession will be a minimum of twelve (12) weeks of age to facilitate adequate socialization as well as appropriate emotional and temperament development through interaction with siblings, dam and other dogs. |
