Help my yorkie was shorn
 

I was with my little ones regularly at the dog hairdresser. last time she got more and more felt in fell. Unfortunately, I did not know what to do, because despite brushing I could not get the felt out. I brought them in time for the dog hairstyle. I asked her to remove the felt marks. I got her shorn back. she looks terrible now. The hairdresser thought it would have been the best. I feel so bad. how long does it take for my little one to look reasonably normal again? I cried for two days. then we happened to meet the breeder. She was shocked and asked me how I could have done this to my dog. your dogs never felt. I feel so terrible, as if I were the worst dog mom in the world.

I am assuming your baby got shaved. The hair grows back pretty fast, but that all depends on how long you keep the hair. If the baby is kept in full coat it could take 9 months to a year to reach long length. My boys hair grows very fast so that also has to be taken into consideration. I don't know what you mean by felt in the hair. If you keep your pup in long full coat he / she must be brushed and combed everyday to keep it from getting matts, knots and tangles in it. I keep my boy in a puppy cut year round, less work for momma.

I also keep Gidget in a puppy cut year round. She might be a little diva but she doesn't like any part of the grooming process. Less stressful for both of us to keep the puppy cut. I'm also curious what you mean by felt in her hair.

I think you're calling felt what we call mats, tangles that kind of build up. I keep two of my girls long and if they get a tangle, behind their ears usually, I will brush it a little and then clip out the extra so as not to hurt them too much. Some types of coats tangle a lot; I kept the whole litter from my momma dog--two of the 4 have furry coats and to have slick coats. A furry/curly coat is much harder to keep and it's better to keep clipped in the puppy cut; a slick cut is naturally easier to keep long.

Hi I am sorry - my English isn’t the best :) yes I meant mats. We
had a lot of snow and a lot of salt was sprinkled against the heaps of snow. And she loved it to snuggles in the snow. The problem was, that she get after that more and more mats in her fur.
I had to bathe her more often, as the salt in the fur itched and she was constantly scratching.. It was a vicious circle. Whenever I had to bathe, she got matted again and again. her fur was not that long -I think about 4 to 5 cm (12 inches I think).

As I said, I regularly took her to the barber and asked for help there. But she did not want to trim it for the last two months, because it was so bitterly cold. and a few days ago I got her back completely shorn! she now has exactly 5 mm (1 inch) long fur and looks like a small otter.

I think it would possible to removed the mats but it would have taken longer. And the hairdresser please do not get me wrong, I still love her, I'm was so scared and I'm so sorry because she's freezing despite her coat (it's not like that yet) Apart from that, I felt so bad because I thought that I just did everything wrong

P.s. I prefer the puppy cut as well - I don’t want the long fur. Because she love the woods and we walk a lot and this is easier. And I brush her every day - I have no idea what a have done wrong. Maybe I used the wrong shampoo or it really was the salt or the
Bathing. And I like the short fur but know she reall looks like an otter ��

Salt is dangerous to dogs skin and paws, you should never let your dog play in areas where salt has been spread, you should rinse off her paws with warm water as soon as you come back from walking her if she has walked where salt was spread, the salt burns their pads, can even crack the skin on their pads if not washed off. Groomers (hairdresser, barber) do not like to take the time work out the matts, it's easier to just shave a dog. You should not give a yorkie a bath if the hair has mats in it. You have to brush out all the mats then bathe them. When you bathe them with mats in the hair it's almost impossible to now brush out the mats, usually the mats have to be cut off. 12 inch long hair is long and will tangle easy if baby is allowed to romp and roll in snow, the salt was more likely burning her skin not itching it. To have a pup with 12 long hair then to see the pup shaved is at first a shock, it was to me some years back with a little girl I had at that time, but you will get use to that look. Puppy cuts a quite cute and easy to keep the dog clean, but by no means ever let her play in snow that has salt on it. If it's one inch it will grow back fast, 5 weeks you will see a lot more hair on her. They sell tangle free shampoo, I have never use it because my boy's hair never gets longer then one inch. Hopefully members that use a tangle free shampoo can offer up their experence with the product they use. Just remember, no more playing in snow that has salt on it, it is also dangerous for dogs to lick thier hair that has salt on it, they shouldn't ingest salt, it's dangerous to their health. If your baby is cold indoors put a T-shirt or sweater on her.

One thing I like, when I have shaved my dogs hair short is to put a sweater on. When their hair is longer the sweaters will tangle the hair. But when their hair is short - not so badly.

Getting the mats out can be very painful for the pup so it is better just to shave them to avoid traumatizing them and causing lots of pain and ever hair loss. I had to have my rescue puppy shaved down as soon as he had his shots because the old owners gave him to me a matted mess.

They might use different salt where she is. A lot of countries have banned some of the more toxic stuff that we still use in the US.

After I shave down my pups over the years for different reasons I did think the look is very cute. Take some pictures of snuggles so you can remember this day too. It's all just part of having a Yorkie

For the sake of the well being of the dog, I hope that would be so. In NY I had to walk my 3 dogs, I would try to walk them where there was no salt but couldn't always avoid it. Poor things would be holding their paws in the air, I would gather all 3 in my arms carry them to the unsalted area then carry all 3 back home, these were not tiny babies lol, one at 9 Lbs, 2 at 13 lol. I always rinsed their paws with warm water to make sure no salt was on their lil paws.

You're not a terrible person or a bad Yorkie mom at all! We all make mistakes with our little ones even though we try our hardest to do the best for them! Don't beat yourself up over this...Instead listen to the good advice given by experienced and caring members here and move on! Again, you'll learn as you go and if this is the worse you ever do with your 'baby'--well, you're in pretty good shape! You love and care for your Yorkie which is wonderful--and I'm sure you're a pretty great person!And hey, my Piper had four teeth pulled for which I blamed myself, until members reassured me it wasn't all my fault. Helped me a lot! Below is Piper after having teeth pulled--she felt soo much better and heck, I think she's still the cutest (goofiest) little thing everrrr!

Tibbe recently got shaved back to a "chihuahua" look about 4 weeks or so ago, not even a mustache and he looks darling. He LOVES being cut short, I think because he can feel human touch better and feels the wind, which he loves. His coat is very thick and heavy. He just frolics and dances for hours any time he gets cut short or even a significant trim. His hair grows like weeds and is already an inch long! I love whatever "coat" he wears but I think he prefers short and free.

Your baby will grow out so don't totally despair. She may secretly love it. Tibbe wears a sweater if the weather is cold but it's my idea to put it on. He never asks for it. I think he's hot-natured.

That Tibbe---he's so joyous and expressive and just lovin' life!!! Such a great lil' guy!
And Naru, Piper wears sweaters when it's cold (30 and below) and even wears them inside--her choice!
