The Quiet Command Gidget and I live in an apartment complex. How do I teach her the quiet command? When she barks because she wants me to do something, it's never just a little bark, it's a shrill bark. So far, no one has complained but I don't want that to happen. Would like to fix the problem ahead of time. Any suggetions? |
Everytime Emma has done it, I clap at her and give her a firm no. She picked it up pretty quickly that she couldn't/shouldn't do it. She just grumbles to herself now when she wants to bark at the noises of the neighborhood. Distractions/redirection with your affirmation of "NO" yet firm will help you. So start with clapping, if that doesn't work, try a noise maker like pennies in a bottle, or escalate to a spray bottle when she's barking. I don't think it takes that long for yorkies to pick up the command of "hush", "No barking", etc. Emma has learned that if I say "no ma'am" , "excuse me" , "eh ehhhh", "not today" LOL she gets what I'm saying and she gets quiet. I think its the tone to be honest. |
Thanks. I've tried the clapping and it doesn't seem to do the trick. Have found a spray bottle and will try using that. That's different from anything else so it might just do the trick. |

I learned from a wise and wonderful YT member, that when Piper 'demand' barks, I go into another room without her and close the door. Now I've only done that for 10-15 seconds at a time, but the results have been astonishing. When I open door, Piper is waiting. I don't say anything, but walk back to where we started, Piper accompanying me. Almost always, Pipe hops up on couch (I let her know she's a good girl) and takes a nap. I love it when stuff like this works--and so quickly!!! |
Summer shirts for Gidget I've got several turtleneck shirts that Gidget wears in cold and cool weather but I need something for her to wear on a daily basis when it's summer time. Any suggestions? |
I've only used the water bottle sprayer one time. Now when she sees me reach for the spray bottle she either lays down or goes to another room. Yorkies are almost too smart for their own good!! |
