Blind Yorkie suggestions I just adopted Sadie who is a blind yorkie and was a rescue. She is my 3rd yorkie baby. My other 2 yorkies are healthy. Ellie is 3yo and Zoey is 2yo. Sadie's age is unknown but the veterinarian estimated her to be between 2-5 years old based on the condition of her teeth. Here is her story: Sadie was born blind. She was attacked by a larger dog (she is 4lbs) and the dog bit her in the face, puncturing her left eye. Her previous owners did not seek medical treatment for her. She was surrendered to the rescue and by that time her left eye had dried out and had to be surgically removed. I adopted her on Sunday night and she is definitely blind. She is careful in walking but does bump into things as she is learning her way around my house. She is the most precious baby and my heart breaks for her though I know she knows no different. She is a spunky little girl and has a wonderful personality. My other 2 yorkies, Ellie & Zoey, are still trying to figure her out. Zoey seems a little jealous at times but Ellie seems to know Sadie has some type of disability. Sadie does not like to be held very much but I feel this is probably because she feels safer with her feet on the ground. She knows her name very well. I want to see if anyone has any suggestions on things I can do for her to make her life easier. It breaks me when she runs into things but she is like a little bumper car and backs up and keeps going. I have seen the halo device for dogs but she is so small I am not sure one of those would fit her. I am worried with taking her to the groomer and things like that. I put her on my bed this morning just to see if she could tell where she needed to stop walking and nope, she was going to keep on going. I was right there and did not let her fall but there is no way she can sleep with us like my other 2 do. I also feel that Sadie was not loved or held much because she seems scared just with sitting on the floor and putting her in your lap. I am hoping that will change but she is also trying to learn her new surroundings. Anyone who has had any experience with a blind dog, please I would love to hear your stories and the things you done for them to make their life better. I love her so much and I want to show her what a loving home is all about. |
Welcome to YT and bless you for not only rescuing but for taking a wee lil baby that is blind. I don't have knowledge of blind dogs, just my senior who became blind as she aged. It's going to be a rough start with Sadie until she learns where in the house things are. Do not move anything unless it's for Sadie's safety. She is only with you a couple of days, it will take her time to learn the entire home or the rooms she is allowed in. Your two other pups will sense she has a disability, when a new baby is bought home with other dogs there is an adjust time your dogs will go through before accepting the new kid. As for Sadie sleeping on the bed with you, you can get a small carrier and put her in it at night and set it on your bed, one that she cannot get out of, she will smell that she is near you and that will be a comfort to her, that is if she will go in it. What horrible owners she had to not rush her to vet when she was bitten. Then just cast her out of their lives, just horrible. Sadie being blind yes does feel safer with all 4's on the ground. When my senior was becoming blind then lost 98% of her vision she did not want to be held, she preferred to stay on the floor. Hopefully there is a member that has had experience with a pup that was born blind and can offer more info. You have a lot of love for this new baby, she will sense this and in time will accept cuddling with you when your sitting on the floor with her, if she didn't have it with her prev. owner. Everything is done in baby steps. Sadie has to learn to trust you and new fur sisters. Since Sadie was born blind and is an older girl darkness is the only thing she knows and has adapted to it. Adjusting to her new surroundings will be her toughest challenge, but she will get through it. |
You are amazing for rescuing her. I have heard of scent stickers for blind dogs that you put on your furniture and stuff. I'm not 100% sure how they work or where to find them but I have accidentally come across them several times. I will try to find them and then post them here. |

I agree with all of the suggestions above. I have had blind dogs and actually have one right now that has very diminished vision. The most important thing is providing a safe, unchanging environment. As for touching and holding, she may turn around...she may not. The best advice I can give you is to let her smell your hands frequently especially when you are feeding her and/or providing her with her needs. That way she learns she can trust you. My foster Charlie has issues with being held....if I need to pick him up, I approach him slowly (he sees shadows) and put my hand out for him to smell....he usually stands still for me to pick him up. He lets me hold him now for short periods of time, but gets very antsy quickly and I just let him down to do as he pleases. |

I have to agree with Phil, the recommendations for people with blind dogs that they have at the bottom of their product page: What a wealth of information. |
I'm sure she will come on well in your care, as you are so willing to try and find a way of helping her , I wish you well. Our 1 st little Yorkie went blind and its was heartbreaking as he was always such a firecracker but he adjusted and as long as we didn't move anything he did get his way around the house . The product for the scent trail looks good and I think the halos are meant to be good too. Good luck with Sadie . |
