Hi! I am new here & new to Yorkie's.
I have a nearly 6-month-old Yorkie who's been the king of the castle since he arrived. Recently, my husband adopted a little Jack Russell and suddenly Milo [my yorkie] refuses to sleep in bed with us. They get along great, play together all day and it's not like Milo is cuddling with his new friend, he is hiding under the bed at night. Is this typical behavior for Yorkies?
I've had other breeds & shelter rescues and have never seen this type of behavior in dogs before. :confused:

No that's not normal. Has he been checked out by a vet? Does he seem to have anxiety?

Yes, he has and yes, he has a separation anxiety. He is also very talented at making sure I know when he is mad at me which sounds insane but I promise you it isn't.
During the day he will lay in bed with me but at night he hides under the bed at bedtime, I am starting to think he is upset with my husband for adopting a dog. Sometimes my Yorkie acts like he has as much sense, if not more, as a human being. Other than that they play together all day. I don't know why the sudden need to hide under the bed at night.

Maybe its not necessarily him hiding, could it be that he's more comfortable there for the den like atmosphere that under the bed provides. The JRT may be too rambunctious for him at night and because its you, your husband and the JRT maybe its a bit crowded so he prefers to be under the bed. I give this thought simply just because the pup seems happy, healthy and content with the JRT and everyone during the rest of day. Night time is, down time, relax, sleep and maybe that's where the pup finds solace.

Is he taking anything for the anxiety? If not you might want to talk to the vet about it.

How long has the new JRT been in your home? They just may need more time. You do still need to be sure your Yorkie has quality time with you.

The JRT has only been here for about a week or so. For now, we don't let him sleep on the bed, he is a rescue and we are still working on breaking him from some behavioral habits.
I have noticed that after I spent some alone time w him at the park playing he seemed to have improved some. Still doesn't sleep with us all night but does come to bed with us for a few hours. I have my husband working with the JRT on his own while I spend my time w Milo.
I may have been quick to panic because he is my baby and always with me. :embarasse

I appreciate all your thoughts!!! :)

I go along with Rachaels thoughts, under the bed is like his lil den, his safe haven. Yorkies have their little quirky ways, Milo is just a puppy and the JRT is a fairly new family addition. I believe in a short time Milo will be back sleeping with you.

A Jack Russell can be a much more powerful and aggressive dog than a Yorkie. Their bone structure is heavier as is the body type. Observe this "playing" and see who is winning. Is the Jack Russell the aggressor? Is the Jack Russell on your bed at night? It could very well be that your Yorkie is worn out by bedtime and maybe even a bit fearful. Maybe separate them a few times a day and control that rough housing. Yorkshire are fearless and full of energy but they were bred to take on small rodents, not a dog heavier than themselves. Jack Russell Terriers were bred to kill rats in barns while the Yorkie were used to go into walls and holes after mice. These genetic traits are deeply engrained. Terriers are energetic but they definitely are not all the same. Has your Yorkie ever fallen off the bed? I would definitely not let them wrestle on the bed. I would give the Yorkie first dibs on the bed and let the Jack Russell sleep in a warm soft kennel. I known that could be an issue but there is something really wrong with your Yorkie and it could continue to get worse and effect his personality.

My JRT is actually older but smaller than my Yorkie. Milo is 14lbs to Tas' 11lbs.
Still, Tas is a lot more energetic so all their play is supervised and when we arent home, we keep them separated just to be safe. While they love to play together, I did notice that Milo wears out a lot quicker, which I always knew he was active and playful but not obnoxiously so, and so we have started to separate them earlier at night. Milo will stay with me in the bedroom while Tas stays out playing w my husband later/longer. We did notice that Milo was getting aggravated to the point of aggression when Tas wouldnt stop trying to play. That seems to be helping, he did come to bed with me at some point last night.
Like everything else, where dogs are concerned, it takes time and patience and supervision but Milo & I have always been so attached, I think I got nervous quick and jumped the gun with my concern.
