Using her bed as a potty pad In October Daisy, then 11 months old, joined our family. I dont know a great deal about her life before she came to be with us. She goes potty outside and uses potty pads inside. Daisy has a crate but doesn’t really use it, she sleeps with my husband and me. Her crate does have a pink pad inside and I just realized she has been using the pink pad/ bed like a potty pad. Like, she will go into her crate just to use it to go potty. We also bought her a dog bed and she has wet that as well. I’m confused on why she would use any type of dog bed/crate pad like a potty pad. As I said she sleeps with us and hasn’t wet our bed and she has a favorite throw pillow on our couch she loves to lay on and she has never tried to go potty on that. Any suggestions on helping her break the habit of using a dog bed for her potty pad? We are getting a new Yorkie puppy this weekend and I would like him to be able to use a dog bed if he’d like and also not pick up with habit. |

Take the pad/blanket out of the crate. When she goes to potty there, give a firm no and redirect her to outside where she should be pottying outside. If it were me, I'd remove the potty pads in totality so she's not getting confused. Limit her access to only the areas you want to protect any carpets etc. Get a different dog bed to (change style and color) that may help with the smell that you may not be getting out when washing the dog bed from the urine smell. |
Some dogs are crate trained. This type of training, if done improperly, can actually teach the dog the exact opposite of what the owner wants. A puppy under 14 weeks does not have the ability to hold back urine. If that pup is left in the crate, without being taken out at proper intervals, it will learn to pee in the crate. Even older pups left in a crate too long will have to pee in the crate and believe it to be acceptable. The bladder has a certain capacity. It could be your baby was left in a crate for long periods of time and learned this trait or maybe the previous owner trained her deliberately to potty in a crate....though I have no idea why. There is one more option. There are some rugs and carpeting that have a plastic or rubbery type backing that have a scent that attracts dogs and cats to urinate on them. Maybe this thing in the crate has a scent that is attracting your dog to potty there. Whatever the reason it sounds like she is otherwise doing well. |
Update: we brought a 12 week old Yorkie puppy home on Saturday to add to our family. Since then Daisy has actually been using a dog bed as a dog bed. The new puppy will lay in the dog bed and she has been laying with him. I haven’t had her in her crate again, taking baby steps. I do think perhaps she was put in her crate and let to do whatever before she came to us. I have hope we will get this |

Congratulations on your new addition. It's amazing how dogs learn from each other. |
