Considering Yorkie pups Hello! New here today. Lost my Cairn terrier last fall. He was 15+ when he died of renal failure. I really miss him so looking at yorkies - mostly for portability. I have found a reputable AKC registered breeder that I’m working with. Considering a brother - sister pair. These are charting to be small at 3.5 lbs. Our kids are grown and the house is too quiet without a dog. I watch my 2 grandchildren a couple days a week. They have or have had dogs. My only concern is that the yorkies are so small. I’d pen them when the kids are here until they are used to them. I just can’t get another Cairn - great dogs but it’s just a thing i can’t explain - too many memories. Had a collie before the Cairn. Should I be concerned about owning such a small dog? Pedigree is immaculate. No shunting, no eye or teeth problems and all others from this breeder are in excellent health. Just worried they be under foot and could get hurt. We want to travel and take them along on planes. No more than twice a year. |
Hi and welcome! Good job in doing your research and my condolences on the loss of your Cairn. I think that you guys could be a great home for a yorkie and you're actually considering two which can be really fun. I'm a single yorkie home and the portability of having 1 yorkie is great IMO. I do travel with Emma when driving or flying (depending on where we are going). I got my first yorkie when my daughter was 6 and I did train her on how to handle such a small dog. I think you will be fine with your grandkids, just remind them they can't pick the puppies up, sit on the floor and let the puppies come to them. Remind the kids that with any puppy that you can be gentle. Both those that are regulars at your home and the yorkies will learn how to be as they do like to follow you everywhere and be close. |
I have a cairn and two yorkies Actually a dad and daughter they are a little bigger at 8 and 11 pounds They are not fans of the grandkids. So I put them away when the kids are here just for safety for both the kids and dogs. Now the cairn loves the kids and plays with them. The grandkids also live with dogs but not as small as the yorkies. I got my cairn after I lost my first yorkie didn't think I could have another yorkie due to all the great memories But after two years yorkie less I had to have one again. They are great dogs as is the cairn. |
Second visit Saw them again today. Decided the breed is just too fragile for me. I’m 6’3” 238 lbs and I’m afraid of an accident. My one grandson is 6 years old and is 4’3” and 82 lbs. I have another grandson and a granddaughter on the way. I watch them all 20 hours a week. Really don’t want to have to be so vigilant with two 3 lb yorkies under foot. We are looking at 25-40 lb breeds. Gotta say I would have loved their tiny snuggles on my chest every evening. It’s going to kill me to say no but i have to put safety first. |

Hello and Welcome. Have you thought of getting a Yorkie that’s charting to be a bit bigger? 3 pounds is really very small. Very small pups will require a bit more precautions then a larger one. |
Decided to look at breeds in the 25-40 lb range. |
