Newby used to Bouviers I'm a yorkie newby. I've had 3 Bouviers, a GSD, and a couple step Collies. Things change. I'd been checking shelters for a while. Found an older Yorkie. She's a sweetie. But I'm a little intimidated. Any general recommendations? Specifically what's the best device for teaching basic obedience? Thanks. |
Welcome! When you say devices what exactly are you referring to? Small dogs should only have the leash hooked to a harness never a collar. Although I do recommend a collar for ID purposes. |
I had a Bouvier growing up! I loved him so much. We were thick as thieves as my parents got him when I was maybe 2. Sweet guy lived to be 17. Very rare for such big dogs. Anyway, for yorkies I find positive reinforcement is the best. Mine is very food motivated so find a high reward treat for your yorkie and do just as you would with any big dog. Spanking or shock/choke collars not the most ideal. I did take Emma to obedience class and I think that's helped with socialization, getting more in tune with the dog and having fun with each other. Potty training, if not already trained, can be cumbersome and take a while however I would suggest crate training and going outside. I found it helpful to me and some may disagree but always remember yorkies are dogs just like a GSD or a Basset Hound are dogs. Each dog is different personality and breed however you do what's best for your household that just so happens to have a family member thats a dog. |
