New Puppy after my sweet baby died. I woke up to find my 2.5 year old Yorkie, Zoe, deceased. She had a small liver. We thought it was being controlled by food. She had no symptoms exempt the last two days of her life which vet attributed to an upset stomach. I am terrified of getting the replacement dog that the breeder gave me (she had a health guarantee for genetic illnesses) even though he is healthy and ready for a family. I can't stand the silence and empty arms. I have no kids. My husband is devastated but hates the silence. Anyone have any advice? The vet says this pup looks fine but we will do bile test at 16 weeks. This dog is not related to Zoe. Any advice? |
If I were in your shoes, I would never take another dog from that same breeder you got your first one from. Ever. Not even if they paid me. It's not about the money. It's about the potential pain and suffering of the Yorkie baby and your family in getting an unhealthy dog from a bad breeder. Do your research and find a reputable breeder. I would take all the time in the world to research this. I know it must be really hard at this very moment or even in a few months later....and my deepest condolences. I can't begin to imagine how you must all feel. But be objective and do the right thing by looking for a better breeder. |
Dog I totally agree with that wise advice. Wait, pray and get a healthy yorkie. Do not chance that happening again. I so sorry about your sweet little dog. Yes get another yorkie. Each precious dog brings their love to us and when they leave they are always close in our hearts. I still carry collars of my past doggies. Never forgetting them . They wait for me at heavens gate. Sending prayers of comfort. |
Did the vet say if it was a genetic issue or not? If it was genetic I would be a bit scared to take another dog from the same breeder. |
1 Attachment(s) The vet said it isn't genetic... It's congenital. I get those two words mixed up. I know the breeder and the dog she offered me actually came from two dogs she purchased from a breeder who retired who I know was good. Plus, all of Zoe's siblings are fine. I'm friends with my vet personally and she takes care of Zoe's siblings, parents and even her grandmother. I have met them all. Beautiful and healthy. I have known the breeder for 4 years and my mom and sister have healthy dogs from her. He is beautiful and healthy so far. |

I see from your picture post that you were able to welcome Opie into your home with open arms . It seems as though you’ve made the best decision for you and your going to be a great mommy to the sweet puppy. Sounds like you are also comfortable with the support received from your breeder and vet. Again congrats and welcome to Yorkie Talk |
Thank you, I was unfamiliar with how the board's work and wasn't getting any answers to my question but then I looked and I figured out I put it in the wrong place in the meantime just puppy really needed a forever-home he was eating, he was full of energy and really needed someone to watch him closely so my husband and I took him home and we love him and we're just being cautiously optimistic. We didn't know what to expect out of a Yorkie, last time. Bless her little heart, our Zoe was never this energetic and her liver problems showed up at about 4 months I'm praying over the next eight weeks to this little guy continues to thrive because she seems perfect. I just feel bad. I hope I did the best for Zoe. We got her prescription food and two different doctors and they said that she could live a full life eating that food and just being careful never to eat anything high in protein and I don't have any kids so she was "it".. I have two other dogs but they're bigger and they go inside and outside but Zoe was never outside unless she was on a leash with me she didn't have access to any food that wasn't her special food. So two different vets told me that she just took a really bad turn and didn't suffer it was very quick but I had no idea that that was a possibility. I guess I was in denial. I miss her so much. When I say my prayers about her I think her wherever she is for all the fun we had together. She was loved by everyone she ever met and fiercely loved by my husband and me. My husband and saw this little guy (Opie) and decided that we need to love a Yorkie so we're going to take what comes. But, this little guy is a firecracker he is either sleeping or going 500 miles an hour. I've never had a puppy this small this young before. We got Zoe when she was four and a half months old. So, of course staring at him and I'm lucky that I can spend 24 hours a day caring for him I'm trying desperately not to spoil him watching training videos and trying to instill good habits. I hope to get some help from this forum. And thank everyone for their well wishes. |
it sounds to me like both you and your husband would like to get another dog....go get one:).........love .........laugh...........and be happy:) |
