Socializing We had our 6 month old Kaia spayed on Dec 20, that went well but did get a note from the vet (Kind of like having your kids coming home with a note from the teacher). The vet said she can see Kaia "is very concerned about the world around her. Other dogs and strange people. Kaia needs to have this addressed now while she is young so that she doesn't become a fear biter." She recommended puppy classes to help socializing and working through this. We will definitely do this once we are past the holidays, but wonder if anyone on the Forum has had any similar situations. :aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
Puppy class is a great idea. I did that with Callie after she had all her shots and then I did it with Joey after his first set of shots. I did dog parks with Callie too but they were ones only small dogs could go in and I know those are not for every one. I also take mine to lots and lots of pet events. All mine love people and other dogs a lot. |
Socializing Thanks, never had this issue with any of our puppies over the years, so new turf for sure.:aimeeyork |

Piper is fine with people and small dogs when we're out, but it's a whole other story when friends and family come to house. Piper becomes very bark-y, aggressive, and even charges at people--disastrous, mystifying, and upsetting. Plus, she's about 6 years old...I'm sure you'll get your little one on track. |
I would agree that you should socialize early and often . I slacked with Emma an she’s turning 4 and she can be nervous at times. We go to puppy classes and yorkie meet ups to help. We started taking her more places as well just. |
We started taking Fabian to public places as soon as he got the OK to go outside. We went to places like farmers markets that have a broad cross-section of sizes, shapes, colors, and ages. There were also lots of other dogs there. We also took him on the local walking/hiking trails. He's very social and tries to kiss everyone he meets, human or dog. We've only gone to the dog park a few times and never took a puppy class because he took so well to the other stuff. If he was still strange, I'd definitely sign him up for a class. |
A note from the teacher... made me laugh! |

With all my puppies, as soon as they got all their vaccines and were ok's to go out and about, I started training them for outdoor potty where they were leash walked. There were several dogs that had the run of a gated driveway that my girls became pals with. I took them everywhere with me, they met ppl, and other animals, dogs, cats. Even took them to farmers market where they met cows, sheep, calf's, goats. They loved all ppl and all animals. I adopted my boy when he was 2 yo, he was not socialized at all which is a huge issue for me. Socialize early, puppy classes are ideal these days. |
