9 week old Yorkie not eating, need suggestions Hello we got our new baby a little over a week ago,she was just 8 weeks old.She has refused to eat since we brought her home,so Monday I took her to the vet,he gave her fluids through iv And medication for worms which she did have. She has now completed her medication and still not eating. He has told us to keep encouraging food and give her nutrical every 4 hours about the size of a dime.I have tried the wet can food Bella, which is what she was sent home with when I bought her, also tried Cesar and natures receipe. As well as chicken I cooked and shredded and scrambled eggs..both which she just licks and spits out just like with dog food.I tried babyfood today and have been able to get a tablespoon of chicken babyfood in her by finger feeding her,I been leaving food out in a place so she can eat freely but will not do so.Help!I tried syringe feeding a milk replacement earlier in the week just to get something in her as she would only take about 2 tablespoons a day..she clamps her mouth shut and I get more on her face than in her mouth have a hard time getting her mouth to open.Help!I am afraid I don’t want anything to happen to her.we love her so much already.she is 9 weeks and weighs 15 ounces right now.she also is wanting to play a lot so worries me she’s burning so much with nothing going in her! |
So sorry you are having theses problems. Your baby is really really young and probably pretty confused from leaving her mama and siblings. Do you know what they were feeding her when you got her? I dint have much experience with this but others here at YT are. Dry experienced. Probably constantly offering her food she can lick fro. You fingers would be good if you can find something that interests her I am hoping other her with more experience will weigh in to help you. |
She left her mom to early which is probably one of the big issues. Do not syringe feed her unless recommended by the vet and if you were showed how by a vet otherwise she could very easily aspirate it and then end up with pneumonia. If she is absolutely not eating anything I would go back to the vet. |
Have you contacted her breeder?? |
Hey guys,I am extremely upset with the breeder. She has not returned one calll of the numerous times I have contacted her this week,I wish If she was more local,I would be beating on her door.I wanted to take her back to see if she could nurse with mom a little longer.Ill do anything to save her.we love her so much already. She runs around with so much energy, the vet said other than the worms and some ear mites she looks to be in good health.Since seeing the vet I am no longer trying to syringe feed.He assures is the nutrical would give her what she needed for now,and said she should have more of appetite after the worms have been treated,we completed the last treatment 2 days ago,I am hoping she will start eating.Any more suggestions to get her to eat.I don’t even know how much she should be taking in,she is 15 ounces.Right now I’d say today she took in 2 tablespoons of chicken babyfood at days end.any suggestions? |

Found this from another thread....I have left a couple of messages for people to help you. Hopefully someone will see them... http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/4736044-post5.html |
Thank you so much for your reply. When I got her they said she was eating a wet dog food called Bella and gave one to take home. However I have been unable to get her to eat it.She will lick it once or twice and then refuse turning her head every time you try to feed to her.If you put in her mouth she spits out then clamps down.Shes done this with any food she has been given (I also tried Cesar, and natures recipe)I tried scrambled egg and also some cooked chicken I blended good, but she did the same. The most I have been able to get her eat was today which was 2 tablespoons of chicken babyfood through the whole day,she also drank some formula replacement today about 2 tablespoons...honestly I really don’t know how much she should even be taking in,she’s weighs 15 ounces.oh my I feel like we have this newborn baby in our home again with all this stress and worry and care, but she is just she’s so precious.I will do what I need to.we are so attached already. |
I appreciate that so very much!!thank you so much!!! |
Hi, Linda did get ahold of me. But on the road. Heat the milk replacement to like you would a baby. Go ahead and syringe feed to get something in her. Place the syringe at the sideof the mouth and drip in. It's pretty safe. How's her poop? Is is solid or runny or bloody? Call me at 816-261-8734. It's easier for me while driving. I pulled over to listen to Lady Jane's message. Lol |
