puppy travel question I have been looking for a yorkie puppy and have finally found one 380 miles from my house. I dont want to ship the puppy. So my question is do you guys think it would be okay to drive that far with the puppy on the way back or should I stop and get a room for the night, so the puppy wont have to travel that far in just one day.Or do you think having the puppy spend its first night with me somewhere other than my home would confuse the puppy? or do you think traveling that far would endanger the puppy's health? |
If you plan ahead, it should be fine. Be sure to have some nutrical for the trip, along with some of the food that the pup is eating and some water from the breeder's house. If your new baby is young and hasn't had all of his/her puppy shots then I would carry a pee pad for him/her to use. I wouldn't worry too much about her being confused, I would make the trip as pleasant for you both as possible and if that means you stay over night somewhere then do that. |

Please know that some babies get car sick, especially for the first ride or so. Rowdy stood and shook for the ride home - only 3 miles. But we started taking him in the car a lot from the very beginning and he never got carsick. I think you will do fine - but i agree about the pee pad, if he hasn't had his shots, you don't want him walking on the grass where lots of other animals have been. |
I don't think a puppy would get confused sleeping in one place one night and another the next night -- if it's with you both times. I brought my pup home and it slept all over the house the first week. My pup had to ride over an hour when I brought him home. He slept the whole way. If I were going on a longer drive - I'd like to have someone with me ...we could take turns driving and take turns holding him. I'm sure he'll sleep most of the way like mine did. And - if he pee's or has an accident - so what! Take some baby wipes, paper towels, and several clean towels. You'll do just fine. Also have water and some soft food available....or whatever the breeder has been feeding him. And, have some Karo syrup with you in case you need it. The breeder should be able to help you with a list of things you should have for the trip. Personally - I'd rather drive all the way home -- just to get there. But, stopping for an evening shouldn't cause any problems at all. I think he'll do just fine. Good luck! (Be sure and take a friend with you!) Carol Jean |
