Exercise/walk in the winter I live in the northern part of Canada and our normal winter temperature is around -20C (-4F) and I know sometimes it's been around -30C (-22F). I need advise on how to make sure my 5.5 pound yorkie gets the exercise she needs. She's used to morning and afternoon walks in the summer/spring/fall time that can be up to 40 mins (like 20 mins of sniffing and 20 minutes of actual walking haha). What do you guys do in the winter time? |
My two youngest love running around in the house chasing a laser pointer. They also make these things with toys that are a pole with a rope and a toy attached to the rope that my little boy likes and they make a small dog version. They love fetch too. |
2 Attachment(s) Main thing is to keep them moving. If you let them stop and sniff around as they like to do in the summer, they're gonna get cold. I bring toys to chase, find hills to run up and down, etc. Footwear are critical in the winter. I use simple fleece booties to get their pads off the icy snow. It takes a little work to get them used to them -- use a toy or a treat to lure them to walk -- but it's worth it. I use a coat too, but I try to find coats that don't restrict their movement. You don't want them to be uncomfortable. Another thing: Ease them in to winter. Don't expect them to start with a 2-mile walk. Start slow with a couple hundred yards. Keep the walks fun. If they every balk and show discomfort, think about quitting early. Here are a couple pics from this week of my guys in 10 degrees F or so. With a coat and booties, they're good to -10F. |
Sooo cute, they are just loving their run. |
Thanks everyone! I'll try these tips! |
We layer jackets for Fabian, just like we would for a human hiker. A Polartec "base layer", with a warm dog coat over it. It was 15 degrees F in NH this AM. |
