Yorkie Staring at Shadow??? My boy is 3yrs old. About a couple years ago I noticed that he would go nuts after a reflection on the floor from one of my bracelets. At first I thought it was cute and then he became obsessed with it, so I stopped and tried not to have bright jewelry that would case a reflection on the floor. Now when I'm in my room and on my computer desk he just stars under the desk for I don't know what as there is no reflection and I don't see a shadow. I have an extra bed for him there and thought there was a bug or something but there wasn't. He just freezes in a staring position. What I do is block off his access with my feet and tell him leave it. Then he walks away. But then when he remembers he comes back and I tell him again to leave it. Has anyone had this situation occur with the starting? What did you do? I read horror stories online about people's pets and don't want him to become compulsion and obsesive. Please give your thoughts if I'm doing the right thing or what else I can try. |

Do you have some puzzle toys that might distract him? Chew toys? Does he get a lot of exercise? If he is playing fetch does he get distracted by *shadows*? Will he stop the play? His last eye exam was? One thing you can do is keep track of the staring - frequency and duration of stare time. A video is often helpfull to show the vet. I would gather the data and take it with me on his next vet visit. |
About the shinny jewelry thing mine loves the laser pointer which is similar. Im not sure what could be going on with the staring thing. Dogs can have the slightest things mess them up or get their attention. It seriously could be the smallest thing. |
@gemy... it's always under the desk. This behavior just started this week. I don't take him outside as he's only 4lbs and always goes on his wee wee pad. He has chew toys but no puzzle toys. I'll have to look into that. When he's playing fetch he doesn't get distracted. Also he just went to the Vet in September and all was ok. The only good thing is that he listens to me when I say leave it and then he walks away. Also, he only does it when I'm at my desk. When I leave my room he doesn't do it. |
My now passed girl use to like to lay down under my desk by my feet when I used my computer even tho she had her bed and a futon in that room. When my adopted boy wants something he will stare at me have you moved your chair to let him get under the desk to see if he'll go under it. |
If you're afraid there's some kind of obsession with finding the reflections under your desk, what about giving him a treat dispensing toy under the desk? The treats would probably change what he associates that area with, if he was used to thinking that the desk has a 'reflections monster'. :D That's what I would do to get rid of the staring issue. Or, is it that you don't want him to go near the desk or under the desk? |
Canana - good idea about the treat inside the toy. He has an extra bed under my computer desk so it's not that I don't want him to go under my desk, its that I don't want him to become obsessed. I'll try the the treat dispensing toy. Can you recommend one? |
There are lots of treat dispensing toys out there. Some of them are too big for my Scottie and Casie. I found these two to be pretty good and keeps them well-entertained: https://www.amazon.com/PetSafe-Buddy.../dp/B0002I0RTY (the small size) https://store.intl.petsafe.net/en-ca...-twist-n-treat When they used to eat too fast, I fed their meals in these. And then I used them for a while when training them out of separation anxiety (I'd leave these with them when I left - and badda-bing - no barking when I leave home). But now, I just use them with some healthy treats when they're bored and 'need something to do'. Casie also loves her Kong: https://www.petsmart.com/dog/toys/in...g-5164381.html . Some people like to fill it with peanut butter, which works well for this purpose. But I find it too hard to clean :p |
My son's dog does the staring at reflections and shadows. She's a pit-bull mix IMO it's pretty harmless as she doesn't try to go after the reflections or shadows and she doesn't do it all the time. I have known cats that do this also |
