Woolly coat??? I think my pup has a woolly coat - please let me know what you think? He is 5 months old and his "terrible oily puppy hair" has grown out and has been cut off. The new hair that has grown in is a silver color. It appears to be a little wavy (but not much). Is is very easy to comb and never matts. It doesn't feel "real silky" -- it is soft, but a little coarse. It is quickly becoming thicker - thank God - (he had very thin hair as a pup) -- and it grows very fast. He may be a silky or a woolly - I don't know. My problem is that he is my first and only Yorkie and I have never been around another Yorkie - So, I have nothing to compare him to. So - just from my description - what do you think? I like his hair the way it is because it is so manageable and easy to care for. And, it's healthy and grows well. Carol Jean |

I would love to see a picture, though I probably couldn't tell you what kind of coat he has. I just want to see the lil guy! :p |
I knew you'd be asking for pictures. I have one on the member gallery - but it certainly is not what he looks like now. I can't believe it's the same dog. I will take a more up to date picture and post it as soon as I can. I should delete the picture I have posted below - it was just for Christmas and neither dog is my Yorkie......... Carol Jean, Sounds like he has a silky coat to me. My 4 Yorkies have all different coat types~as you can see in my avatar. A thin coat to start with is a good thing... My first Yorkie, Lacey had a beautiful THICK puppy coat. I thought she looked much healthier than the other female in the litter, as her coat seemed so thin and sparce to me. Well, Lacey's thick black wooly/cotton coat is a challenge now! I never quite know how to have her groomed. Since getting her I know to look for the puppy with the thin coat, they end up with the beautiful spun silk. Kara |
Yorkie3 - Thank you for your response. I, too, think my Yorkie may have a silk coat. I can comb him only every few days and there are never any matts. And, as I mentioned, even wearing clothes doesn't cause him to matt. I don't care which type of coat he has - except that I am certainly pleased that he has one that is easy to comb and care for. coat If you can run a comb through and it does not mat, it is not wool...wool is like a lamb..no amount of oil, rinse, thinning will help it. |

My fingers could no longer take it. About 20 yrs ago I had a wooly male (his sire was Number one LOL)..one day I got so fed up I shaved him from his nose to the tip of his tail. He looked like one of those hairless cats...I felt so bad, I bought him a bunch of tee shirts.. |

Like you I don't know much about yorkie coats and don't know what my Tiger has. Can anyone tell me what it is based on these pictures? Right now he has really bad "dandruff" (asll thes white stuff) and I don't know what to do :confused: :confused: :confused: . Other than that, it still feels sooo very soft and wavy as you can see. I can't wait for you to update and send pictures of your yorkie |

my coco has a mix of both i think :rolleyes: he isn't silky,but yet he isn't wooly. he is exactly like a super soft stuffed animal. :D he truly is a coco bear ;) |
I started this thread about my Yorkie's coat, which was thin - getting thicker - and is very easy to comb - never matts. One of you mentioned the woolly coat being like "wool." Well - I also have a Bichon and his coat is really like "wool." It is the absolutely thickess, most dense coat I have ever seen in my life. I couldn't get a comb through him if my life depended on it. So - he has to go to the groomer occasionally, and I keep him very short. I'm mentioning this because I can positively say that my Yorkie does not have a coat like this at all. In fact, if any of you have a Yorkie with a coat like my Bichon's -- I can certainly understand your frustration. Carol Jean |
