Top Knot Hey everyone! Cali and I are new to Yorkie talk. Miss Cali is my 10wk old baby I just got her Friday. She is such a sweetheart who is fearless already. My question this evening is... What should I do if anything to help Cali have a beautiful top knot when she gets older? |
:welcome4: :yorkietal So glad you joined our growing family of Yorkie Lovers!! Your Cali is adorable. A lot of things go into a good coat - genetics, a good diet, good grooming. You can't do anything about her genetics, but you can help her reach her coat potential by feeding her the best possible diet, doing all you can to keep her healthy and free of parasites, both internal and external (worms and fleas for example), and good consistent grooming practices. |
Thank you for the info. I hope she has a silky coat! I have another question, she has white hair under the black on the top of her head could she be blonde when she gets older? Dad has a blonde head and mom is mostly light except for her back |
Yorkie pups (at least those with "correct coats") are born black with tan points. They are colored very much like teeny tiny rottweilers. As they grow and mature, their coats will go through many changes before they reach their adult colors. Some yorkies continue to change coat color throughout their entire life. The light colored hair on the top of her head is the tan hair growing in replacing the black puppy hair. |
Thank you! I’m excited to see her grow |
Welcome to YT, yes you will see many color changes in your yorkie as she grows. My boy is now 6 years old and his saddle is still changing color. |
Groom her, groom her, groom her. Make sure she is used to being combed, brushed, cleaned (especially eye goop) and pampered. Make it a daily calm ritual. And don't pull on the knots and tangles, be gentle with her coat. When doing topknots be gentle about removing the band once you start using a band to put up the topknot. I get the best tangle proof bands from TopLinePet (a member on here). They don't snag or rip the hair but I usually cut them out anyway. And the topknot holds in very well. After being a covered elastic user I switched over to this product and it's fantastic. Good luck with your new baby! |
Thank you all for the advice. I’ve been brushing her daily and she does well but of course she wiggles. I need to get her a Comb. I should get her some bands now and start putting them in her hair to get her use to it. Again I’m so excited to see what she will look like when she gets older |
