Whining puppy all night long!! My puppy was fine the 1st 3 nights home. put him in his crate at bedtime and he lied down and slept. But last night our little angel whined all night long!!!! I figured he would give up after a while but no. On line they said do not take him out of the crate, because he will know you will eventually give in. His crate is big enough, with a bed, potty area, water dish and dish with food if he gets hungry during the night. He does have room to walk around. The crate is also in our bedroom so he is not alone. But seriously he made so much noise you could hear him in every part of the house. LOL there was no escape!!! He is only 8 weeks old, you would figure he would have tired out after a few hours! But of course I am sitting by his crate and after 8 solid hours of him crying he just fell to sleep and I have to leave for work in an hour. Please help!!! |
Welcome to YT, the hardest part of a new puppy is the first week, they are missing all they have known, their momma, litter mates, their human momma, he is not use to sleeping alone. You have done all the right things, a nice size crate, crate in your bedroom. At night try putting an article of your clothing in the crate, perhaps a blouse or shirt that you wore that day, it will have your scent on it and that can be a comfort to him. If the crate is near your bed stick your hand or fingers in it so he can smell you are right there. If you cave in to him and take him out and put in your bed he will expect it every night. |
Many animals/dogs are not amenable *at all* to being confined to small/tight spaces. None of my dogs would tolerate crates, and I honestly couldn't blame them one bit. Instead, we used the Iris Pen and had it next to our bed when they were puppies. Keep in mind that these tiny creatures, as puppies, were previously used to being with their Momma and litter-mates 24hrs a day - cuddled in close, nice and warm with all that company. Then suddenly, someone adopts them and they're put alone inside a small enclosed "box" - expected to just 'flip a switch' and be okay with it....it doesn't really work like that with little baby creatures who were previously 100% surrounded by their furry family and now 100% alone. On top of that, 8 weeks is really considered premature to be adopted out for a yorkie; he should've been kept with his Momma until a full 12 weeks old....so this is unfortunate as he will now miss out on some of his socialization skills that are learned from Momma and litter mates. Additionally --- you should be aware that at 8 weeks old, he is *much* more vulnerable in terms of hypoglycemia, health overall, size, etcetera -- so keep a vigilant eye on him - and make SURE he is eating a meal about 4x per day!!! |

Thank you for taking the time to help me!! Thank you for all your advice!!! This is such a big help!!! Plus I had no idea that 8 weeks is to soon for a puppy to come home. I bought my 1st yorkie from this same breeder and that is the age she sends all her puppies home with the new owners. And Toby my 1st had no problems at night, but at least now I have some ideas on how to make things easier for Teddy my new baby! Thanks again! |

He is awful young most puppies are still with their moms until 12 weeks. I would go with a smaller crate that just he fits in and possibly put it on your nightstand or a table next to your bed where he can see you. They make things called snuggle puppies that you can buy online and at petsmart now with heart beats that help. Crates are the safest place for a puppy. When you put him to bed if you do all the things I suggested he should eventually go to sleep and if he wakes up take him potty and put him back. It’s a huge change for the little guy going from siblings and Mom and then without them. |
I say scoop him up, bring him to bed....! Nah, I have no advice to offer cuz Piper pretty much rules the roost around here, cuz I pretty much cave so often. I'm sure you'll do much better staying on track with your little, little guy. |
I have had Cali since Friday the 8th she was 9 wks old. I did the same set up. I put two blankets (pet blankets) folded into a square one on top of the other. I also put blankets on her kennel so she can’t see out except for the bottom. I have also heard they could be lonely or cold so I made sure it would be warm. I also place a large enough toy for her to c cuddle with. She has been a perfect angle lol until I get up in the am for work. Hope this helps. |

I read to put her to sleep where they can see you and I also put a piece of used clothing in with the pup and they sleep through. Ear plugs keep me from being woken up with every squeak. You may need to cover the crate with a dark blanket at some point during the night. |
