New puppy Hi guys. I have a question that i would like peoples answers/ experiences or suggestions. I have a fiesty 3 year old male yorkie. He is really well tempremented and listens to commands 90% of the time, and is your usual great natured yorkie but he also has a wicked indepndent streak. But like i said can also be fiesty and single minded, and he can get a little jealous or starts to attention seek when people are around me. I am thinking of getting a new addition to our pack and was wondering how the best way would be to go about deciding on whether to get a female or another male, and then how to go about the right way to introduce them. And also if by getting another yorkie to keep him company and play with him and be his friend would that potentially have a calming and relaxing influence on him in a more fullfilled way by having constant company for when im not there? Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions. |
There is really absolutely no way to tell whether a female or a male would be a better companion - it's really all about their own unique personalities. I think many, many dogs do enjoy having another dog in the household - it's less lonely when the humans are gone, for sure. |
I have always had females of various breeds, then I got hooked on yorkies and ended up with a pack of 3 girls, all 3 years apart. I had no problems with them They all got along with each other, they were all very well socialized with all animals, dogs of every size and ppl.. Socializing at a young age is very important. A little sister would be cute to have and males do get along better with females but both must be spayed and neutered. It also depends on the personality of the dogs. The general way of introducing an only fur child with a new fur member is on natural grounds. A place out of your home or yard. A leashed meet and greet. If you are getting a puppy this may not be possible, a wee little puppy should not be exposed to the outside world until all vaccines have been given, so you may have to introduce them in your home. Most older dogs a scared of wee lil bouncing balls of nipping fur, and puppies have a different smell, so older dogs cannot identify it's a dog. Most older dogs will not take to a new kid right away due to a frisky nippy puppy and will keep their distance, but they do come around, it could take a few week to a couple of months for the older one to accept the new kid, but when this happens they will be BFF. Good luck and please do keep us posted on what you have decided to get. |
I would take him to be around other dogs to see how he acts first. Some dogs are very happy being the only dog. Really it would be up to you about what sex you got. I have heard many many ways to introduce dogs and I have always just set them down in the house and watched carefully. That is how we did it when I was growing up and we have never had any issues. |
