Problems With Heartworm Oral Medication
 
Does anyone's yorkie get digestive issues once a month, after the administration of a heartworm medication? I tried most of them, same reaction. Vet tried to convince me it couldn't be and diagnosed her with pancreatitis, but later full screen blood work ruled this out. I'm at my wit's end and want to discontinue the meds, but I live in a climate where 5 to 6 months of the year we have mosquitoes.
I once tried a flea/tick topical, and my dog had an adverse reaction to it, so I wouldn't be inclined to use a topical heartworm either.
Any holistic or natural approaches to this problem to prevent heartworm?

For yorkies that have sensitive stomach there is the non flavored heartgard (not the chews) they use that one in dogs with food allergies. Also there is topical Revolution that some Internal Medicine doctors use for dogs prone to pancreatitis.

Have you tried giving it after a meal? You tried interceptor and heartguard? A holistic approach really isn’t going to protect them and they should be getting it all year.

Yes I have always given it after her dinner meal. I'm still going without from Oct. or maybe Nov. until end of March. If she doesn't get sick once a month over this time, then it will be conclusive it is the medication. If she does, then the medication will not be the cause.

Which heartworm med are you using? It could be as simple as just switching to a different preventive.

There are no holistic treatments to prevent heartworms. I have had many pups and have never had any issues with Heartgard or Sentinel....those are the ones I use and have been for many years. it is highly unlikely your pup is having issues due to any heartworm prevention....you need to look at other possible causes such as food and/or treats.....or chews.

Here is a link that will give you the information you need regarding the risk of heartworms...definitely not a good idea to leave your pup unprotected. The treatment if they contract heartworms is horrible and expensive....and it can kill them.

So sorry you are having those problems.
We have used Revolution topical for years with no problems. Like that it is dosed by size of the dog, but then most probably are also.

:thumbup: Revolution is also what I have used for many years with great success and no problems.

Great advice and ideas have been shared - you can always count on YTers. There are many safe solutions for heartworm prevention - sometimes it takes trial and error to find the solution that works best for your furkid.

Oops, now I see that. Gee that does not leave much. Is there an injectable, maybe monthly, or something like that. Seems like some type of allergy testing would be something to look at here with a run down of all ingredients.

You know, when Noah was loading all those critter, I would have been ok with him leaving out the mosquitoes :D

Yes, and after this year I'd add yellow jackets, wasps and hornets.

Since you said you have tried most brands, I will assume you tried it. If not, that is my suggestion.

It’s really better to give all year.

The only injectable I know about has extremely bad side effects.

Me too, I’m super allergic to them I get huge painful welts and if I get more then like 5 at a time I have to go on steroids and sometimes antibiotics.

My 2 are getting Bravecto now. It is every 3 months. I previously had problems with the heart worm medication. My Sissy would always have upset for a couple days after. I was giving the medication at dinner time. The vet suggested it be given the the morning instead. I guess the activity of the day made it adsorb faster or something rather than staying in her stomach while she slept.

Sorry you are having so much trouble with the meds.
I use Sentinel Spectrum and have found no trouble. However I am always cautious with meds and only used the proportion of the chew according to my dog's weight. The instructions say to crush the tablet into small pieces and mix with food, and I really crush the tablet up. I feed in the morning so I can see if he has any side effects, but so far so good. Good Luck.

With chews the medicine is not evenly distributed so just giving some of it is not getting them all of the medication so I would make sure to give the whole chew.

I called it a chew, but it is a really hard tablet. But your comment is still valid.

We also use Revolution topical successfully.
