Best Flea/tick meds Hello all!! I've had my new baby for a little over a month now, and she has been on revolution which seems to work well for her. However because we have deer ticks in the area her vet wants me to try her on something else. I have read a lot of the threads on here about the different options as well as online and I can't seem to make a decision! For heartworm i'm leaning on interceptor as opposed to heartguard but for flea and tick meds I'm really debating between the topicals Advantix or frontline versus the oral, nextguard. I've read bad reviews on all of them. Frontline seems to be the safest but least effective. I live in Virginia right outside of the Washington DC area. Advantix scares me because of the pesticide it has in it that's toxic to cats, not that I have a cat but that level of toxicity scares me. And I read about other horror stories relating to nextguard such as dry itchy skin, vomiting and in some cases seizures and the development of pancreatous. For people who live in my neck of the woods I would love you your latest input! I travel up to the New Jersey New York area often so Northeast input is needed too! |
Actually nexguard is very safe the only issues is in dogs that have a history of seizures. My vets feels it’s so safe that she put her dogs on it. She had only had one issue with it when I talked to her and put mine on it and that was one dog got a bit lethargic. Topicals make my older girl very ill and it was a pain to use it because I had to try to remind my grandparents not to touch them there. Either way whether topical or pill it goes into the blood stream. Mine take heartguard for heartworms I believe it has been around the longest and we never have had issues. I used interceptor many years ago before they stopped making it. I also always give it to them after a meal just to make sure there is no tummy upset. |
I've used Nexgard and Simparica with good results the past two years. I only use flea/tick meds as needed but I've never had any bad side effects with either of my 2. I can't say whether I like one better than the other. Simparica is a tad cheaper and I think covers one more type of tick than Nexgard (I could be wrong about that though - have to double check). They both seem to do their job. My pups are in the pool all summer long and it was a pain to try to keep them dry for 24 hours with the topicals. I also just hated putting it on them because they wrestle and bite each other and I pet them, etc, and I don't know... I just didn't like it. So I was really glad when the oral meds came out. I give Heartguard every month for heartworms with no issues. |
My boy is 6 yo, I use interceptor and Simparica with no side affects. I used front Line from the day it hit the shelves, my kidos never had a flea or tick while on it. If your baby is under 6 months old make sure what ever you decide on can be given to puppies. |
We use Seresto collars for our babies, 8 month protection of about $70 and they don't have goop all over them. |
