Can't Figure Out Sleeping Arrangements... I hope I can get some advice from you guys on this! We still can't come up with a good place for Max to sleep. For a year, we let him sleep on the sofa downstairs. He was so good and would patiently wait there in the morning for us to come down. Now, he leaps over the pet gate and comes to cry at our door every morning at around 5:30. We've tried letting him sleep in the bed with us, which used to go pretty well. Now he spends the whole night moving around and jumping off the bed, pretty much disrupting any sleep. If he's in a crate, he barks at 4 or 5 am and won't stop. We would love for him to sleep in his bed next to ours, but he just jumps in ours and is disruptive. Putting the cage in our room doesn't help either. We will soon be moving to a two-bedroom town home while we build a house. Any ideas for where to set up his sleeping area? I need to reduce barking as much as possible since we will have neighbors sharing a wall. Willing to try just about anything! |
I would do the crate where he can see you. If he is waking up he needs to go potty so I would take him potty and if you get up around that time you can stay awake or try putting him back to bed. Dogs are pack animals they don't really like being alone. |
I have never crated my dogs for sleeping purposes. They were "crate-trained" for traveling safely in cars and for resting at dog shows, but my girls have always either slept with me or in their own bedroom. If you want Max to sleep in his bed next to yours, that would be a great option - the training process may result in some sleepless nights, but the end results would be peaceful sleep for everyone with Max where you want him. It could very well be that 5:30 or 6:00 is just his "wake up-go potty and get the day started" time. Changing his feeding time and routine could help such as keeping him up later at night and fewer daytime naps. |
For my girl, she has a few sleeping areas that she'll switch up during the night :p What I do is leave my door cracked open and she'll either sleep in her soft dog house or at the doorway. With the door opened, she'll sometimes go sleep in the hall or at her other sleeping spots. The only disturbance is when she decides to wake people up (mostly me) or if she wants to sleep with my mother on the futon and then she'll try to wake her up so she could get up there (I'm thinking to make or get a ramp so she can get up or down herself). But yours might be like mine, her "toss and turning" is switching sleep locations. |
Thanks for the advice, everyone! I think we will try bringing his crate or maybe his bed in our room again, so he will be close. I may increase his walks during the day so that he will be more tired as well. He seems to be less restless after a day with more walking. |

i would let him sleep in your room.....in his crate or his bed, whichever he prefers. Each of mine sleep in different places...in my bed, in pet beds or crates. I have my own plus fosters. Some pups love crates...I never close them though. Make sure he gets plenty of exercise before bedtime...hopefully that will tire him out and he will sleep longer. Some pups just seem to get up earlier than others....just like people I guess. |
Buddybear sleeps in a small dog bed near my knees or lower legs unless he thinks I need a cuddle then he will curl up in my armpit.:D |
Okay -- you said first thing: the sofa worked perfectly for him, perfectly for you! The only thing that did not work was the GATE. So FIX the gate situation. Done. Make the gate taller - make the gate work; then you're both happy again. Keep it simple. |

Yorkies are social creatures . If he is jumping the gate and coming to a closed door its because he wants to be with you. Do you work? If so, think about how long he is alone. |

Anyway......we found out after he was discharged that it was because he hates to be crated and wants to be fed on time! :D I emailed her about a week after discharge to let her know the only issue he had was that he was a typical yorkie. |

My little one sometimes will not go to sleep unless I hold him when I hold him he calmes down he sleeps in the bed with me. Holding him is the only way I was able to keep him from not being too hyper |
