Dogs For The Earth
 
Hi all!

I'm looking for a healthy food for Zhoie after she had surgery for a bladder full of Struvite stones. She ate Fromm kibble for years and apparently the 7% moisture was not enough as she is not much of a water drinker. Since her surgery I have switched her to canned food only to get 80% or so moisture. I'm still concerned of a reoccurrence issue and have been looking for a healthy alternative for her.

Has anyone feed or heard of Dogs For The Earth dog food? It's an organic food based in Longboat FL. Sounds good but I haven't been able to find much on it.

Thank you for any responses you may have.

Never heard of the brand. Will be watching for reviews as I am always looking for the best for my girls.

I need a low carb & starch diet, but I still want a quality food for her, so hard to find.

I have, but my understanding is the quality is not good. Still looking for a more healthy alternative.

Prescription food is made for certain issues and saves dogs lives. It is awesome and I would stay on that. You have to be careful of the people who try to tell you what's good for dogs and what's bad based on ingredients. Health issues and prescription food is a whole different thing that can't be judged the same way. They have vets that work hard on that food.

I'm sure they do and it's difficult to determine what may be good, what isn't, what works for one dog, doesn't for another. It's an on going process of finding the right one. Thanks for your help.

Sometimes trial and error is exactly what it takes - that and some guidance from your vet. Sounds like you are on the right track. Good luck and please keep us updated on your journey to find the food that works for Zhoie. I agree, what works for one dog may not work for another.

Tena, the negative stuff you have read about prescription foods is FAKE NEWS.

You can choose to believe what you want, but I have had dogs on those foods for many years with wonderful results. Their medical conditions improved! You know I have had multiple pups with medical issues who lived much longer than they were supposed to....some of them were on those foods you have been told are not good quality.

The Dog Food Advisor is a human dentist. If you really want to know about dog foods, go to the following site and be sure to look at the credentials of the vet nutritionist who runs the website.

I don't do trial and error when it comes to the health of my pups. I rely on good veterinary advice.....that which is backed by science! When I have a sick pup, I listen to my vet!! I don't rely on the marketing that is done by the "holistic companies" who don't hire vet nutritionists. They spend more money on marketing. And, I certainly don't rely on that guy who runs that dog food advisor site who looks only at ingredients with no science to back him up...and he does not even bother to consider quality control. Scary to me that so many think he is some guru of dog foods.

I had an awesome vet nutritionist for my Cookie ....but ended up losing her. Guess who hired her? Royal Canin! They hire the best!

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup: AND they do feeding trials. It is one thing to go trying different foods for healthy pups and yet another when it comes to those with medical issues. I don't play around with that stuff. My Olivia was given one year when first diagnosed with PLN...she lived 4 more years and I am quite sure her RX food had a lot to do with it.

Years ago, I adopted Cody a 9 year old with renal issues. He was put on Purina NF and his kidney values started to improve immediately. He lived for another 4 years after that.

Time and time again I have seen RX foods work.

Here is the link to the resume for Dr. Remillard. Certainly someone I listen to when it comes to diets for my pups. Her website is awesome! No disrespect to anyone, but I personally think the DFA should stick with dentistry on humans.

Yes, I did thank you on FB Linda, I appreciate all the information you have provided, I know how knowledgeable you are. Unknown to you, Zhoie has tried two of the script foods, one of which was Royal Canine SO which didn't agree with her. Before moving on to the next one, I'm simply researching alternatives. I may find something and I may not, but I won't quit searching for a food that will works well for my girl and she tolerates well.

I wish you well in your search. Do be careful with the small companies that don't have the money to hire the best in terms of knowledge about diets and who must have their foods processed in places that may be less desirable. I hope you will take a look at that link I provided. petdiets.com You can email Dr. Remillard and she is very good about answering... it is on the FAQ page.

:thumbup: Tena you might also want to look into consulting with a vet nutritionist and trying home cooking. I loved doing it when I tried it with Callie but she just didn't take to it.
