Best Crate Size I am two weeks away from bringing my puppy home. I have been buying all the supplies, but have yet to pick a crate. I have a separate car carrier and the crate I buy will stay in my apartment. What is the best size? I am looking at one that is 25 inches by 18 inches by 21 inches. Is that too big? Thank you for any advice! |
My adult 7 pound yorkie has the 18inch. The crate should big enough for her to stand up and turn around. My dog is comfortable and there's no accidents. Too large a crate I think they learn it's ok to mess in. |
We use airline type plastic crates with a washable crate mat that has a built in bolster around the edge. They are 24"long x 15" high x 15 " wide- I order them from Drs Foster & Smith/ "pet dens". We use these because if we need to evacuate for a hurricane( or any reason- just have Irma on my mind...) they are already used to their "crib". |
When you say 18 inches, is that the height or length? |

It really depends on how big your puppy will grow. We started with 18" but since we have big boys 11 and 12 lbs they quickly outgrew them and we had to get the 24". Maybe if your baby is charting at/under 6-7 lbs the 18" would be fine. |
I bought a small crate that had an optional divider to adjust as my puppy grew. Without the divider, it was too spacious. It worked out really well. I can't remember the exact dimension...will have to get back to you. The one I used is by MidWest and has two doors, plus the divider: https://www.amazon.com/MidWest-Stage...0002TKBUS?th=1 |
