Canagan 1 Attachment(s) Hi everybody, Within 4 weeks we'll get a new puppy, yeaaahh (her name will be Casey and she is almost 7 weeks now). I'm searching for the best food I can buy for her (off course :)and actually I'm thinking of buying Canagan although the Vet advised Royal Canin. At first I was planning to buy RC for her, until I saw that RC put some stuff into their food (BHT and BHA) that causes cancer. Anyway, I'm very convinced now to buy Canagan but, although they say that it's also for puppies, I still doubt if it's the right thing to do at this age. Does anybody has experienced Canagan with a puppy and does it go well? (Excuse my English, I'm Dutch) I love to hear from you!! PS: in the attachment you can see a picture of "our Casey" (sooooo cute) Love Merel |
I was looking at the ingredients list for RC and it dosent have BTA or BTH. |
You should leave the baby on the same food the breeder was feeding her until she has adjusted to her new surroundings. This baby has many adjustments to make, she is leaving her mom, litter mates and human mom, coming to a strange home with strangers, new surroundings, smells, sounds, schedule, many adjustments for a wee lil girl, what you do not want to do is to upset her stomach with a change of food. She may not eat right away because of new surroundings, what you don't want to do is make eating harder for her by changing her food. When she has settled in and you feel you want to switch her food do a slow transition. I am not familiar with Canagan so cannot offer an opinion. Hopefully others have had experience with it. |

Thx for your reply. I read it on several dutch websites (I'm Dutch). Just like you I couldn't find it in the ingredients list so I don't know if it's true. But just to be on the safe side, I want to give Casey something else. I know for sure that Canagan is one of the best but although the manufacturer says that it's also good for puppies, I wanted to know if any of you have experienced it already. Love Merel |
How exciting! New puppy! Love the picture! Not familiar with the other food but Royal Canin is stellar food. I think you might not be getting the best information in that area. How old will your baby be when you get her? I'm hoping she will be at least 12 weeks old when you take her away from her mom/litter. I agree, it is best to keep her on the food she has been on for a while until she settles in with you. |

Thank you so much for your concern, I really appreciate it. Off course I wouldn't give it to her right away. It must be very difficult for all the little babies to leave their save place and everything they know. Actually when you think about it, it's really sad. They'll never see their (dog)family again. We've had 3 Yorkies already (18, 17 en 11 years old when they died). She will get all the space and time she'll need to adjust before we"ll give her (bit by bit with her normal food) a different type of food. You really should look at Canagan. It's from England (they sell it in Holland as well) and it's one of the best!! Love Merel |

Casey will be exact 11 1/2 Weeks when we get her. Right now we're going there every week to hug her. We can't wait to bring her home!!!:) We are very much aware of the fact that Casey needs time to adjust and she will get all the time she needs. Luckely it's just my husband and I (no kids).:) Thx for your good advice, feels so good to know that there are people who really care for animals. Love Merel |
It is important to leave her on the food the breeder has her on. I assume the breeder has chosen a high quality puppy food. If after you have her you and your vet determine that the food is not meeting her nutritional needs then you can decide what's lacking. There are ways to add foods to supplement, too. Changing a yorkie's food is no small things they are very sensitive. I used the ebook from Yorkshire Terrier Information Center | All About Yorkies. I have seen others recommend Yorkies for Dummies. Enjoy your preparations! |

So, during all those years I learned a lot about Yorkies. About sensitivity....the 1st York (I'm talking about the '80), ate the same things we did, never, really never I've been to the Vet with him and he was 17 when he died because of his age, he wasn't sick, we didn't put him to sleep, he died natural. The last one (18 years of age) was sick last year and had to spend some time in the hospital because both of his lungs were infected. The doctor subscribed prednison for the rest of his life but I gave him chinese herbs instead, especially made for dogs. He never ever was short of breath again. So...doctors don't know everything and breeders either. The only thing I wanted to know was if there's anyone who feeds their puppy Canagan and if yes, what experience they have, that's all!! |
Please don't be offended by BayleighL suggestion of the book "yorkies for dummies" Back when home computers came out (appox.late 90's) and people didn't know to use them, there was a book published called "computers for dummies" which only means for beginners (And I purchased lol). Since that book was released many books have been released for beginner's "cooking for dummies" "iPhone for dummies" so "yorkies for dummies" is a book for people that are not familiar with the breed, beginners. I am sure BayleighL did not read every post to see you have had 3 yorkies. My boy is my 5th yorkie, my first going back to 1981, I have tons of books on the breed. When I joined YT and saw "yorkies for dummies" out of curiosity I purchased it after owning yorkies for 35 + years. Also keep in mind many new owners of yorkies may read this thread and would benefit to know there is a book for first time yorkie owners. |

I really thought she had the idea that we're buying a dog not knowing what we're getting in to. I've never heard of this book so I'll see if I can buy it in Dutch. Never to old to learn! Sorry BayleighL that I misunderstood your message. |
