My amazing 16 year old Yorkie! 1 Attachment(s) Hi, I'm very new to this site and am not sure yet how go get around. I joined mainly because of having issues with my 16 year old little girlie. She is in fairly good health. However, lately she would rather pee/poo in the house than use her doggie door. Has anyone else experienced this with an aging fur baby? |
My girl passed at 17 yo, when she was 16 yo she started peeing and pooping in the house, unknown to me then it was the beginning of dementia. You should mention this to your vet, she could also be in early stage of dementia. |
I've had that happen with older dogs too. Agree, talk to vet. But congrats on a long, healthy Yorkie life! My oldest is 13 and I cherish every single day with him because you never know. |
Thanks so much for the information. I've often thought she had doggie dementia. Not quite sure what the Vet can do but will definitely bring it to his attention. Today she is extremely listless and it breaks my heart. However, she is eating pretty good and drinking water. Again, THANKS for the replies! |
There is medication for or starting of dementia, I wish I had know this back in 2012. Maybe you can limit her space, not give her free roam of your home. |
Your senior girl is beautiful! I pray that I will have my boys around at 16 years old. I agree with the others that sudden changes in potty habits can be a sign of mental and/or physical problems. Talk to your doctor. Our senior girls in the past had to have medication for urine incontinence. You may also have to take a more active role in taking her outside to potty regularly, rather than relying on her to use the doggy door. Maybe going through the door to outside is physically taxing on her, going that distance too. Maybe there is a little fear. |
The same thing happened with my senior baby. Eventually she had to wear doggie diapers because she had started urinating in her sleep. It wouldn't hurt to go get her vet check. Any change in behavior at that age does warrant some concern and should be monitored. |
