From the hospital.... On Tuesday I was just brushing Max. Spenser ,who loves the brush, reached to grab the wooden handle. His canine tooth pierced between the first and secon joint of the left pointer finger. A true accident. I washed the finger put on neosporum, and lastly a bandage. Wednesday morning the tip of the finger was sore and swollen, so I took off the bandage thinking it might be irritating the finger. The pierce spot could not be seen. By noon, my finger was swollen to the second joint, and by evening the third. Thursday morning I stopped at the care center nearby assuming I'd get an antibiotic and leave. Wrong. I was sent to the local medical center's ER. I was examined, xrayed ( the finger), two pick lines were put in, and IV begun. They put me in infectious disease, assigned a doctor and I write to you from there now. My finger and the hand to where the infection spread responded well to the IV antibiotics and I am expecting to go home tomorrow. It all seems like such over-kill, but the infection spread like wild-fire. Please take care of any insults to the fingers. The doctor says they are the most seriou. Cheers, Gew |
Wow, who would have thought!!!! Glad to hear you'll be home soon. |
Yikes glad your getting better. Sometimes neosporin can be a double edged sword because it can trap bacteria in. |

Not sure the neosporin is to blame. I just think that any scratch or bite of a dog on a human's finger should be taken very seriously. I thought neosporin and a bandage were enough and I was obviously wrong. Waiting to hopefully be released from the hospital after five days of intervenious IV, etc. Gew |
Oh dear! Glad you got it checked out. Dog bites (even if accidental) are always problematic. Hope you are home soon!! |

The Mayo Clinic released these instructions for treating puncture wounds just a couple of weeks ago: Puncture wounds: First aid - Mayo Clinic They recommend antibiotic ointments like Neosporin. HOWEVER, they do have the following caution: Quote:

Yes, my doctor, an infection disease specialist, said dob bites/scratches are always serious, but more so on the hand and fingers. He said no matter the size ( mine was a dot) if the mouth of a dog breaks the skin, go to your doctor. Gew |

I sent an employee home because he'd been bitten by a cat; he called from hospital and his situation was like yours. I've always known cat bites are very, very dangerous, but didn't know our canine's canines could cause such serious trauma so quickly...Thank you for the information and I hope you're happily at home reading this! |
