Confused!!!
 

Hello I am new here and have so many questions about my new baby yorkie Coco. She is six weeks old and want to be able to learn how to be the best mommy I can be to her. Please help.

Welcome to YT, just so you know, it is not legal to sell a puppy under 8 weeks old. I have to assume you purchased your baby from a person that is not a breeder, someone that had a litter and just wanted the puppies out and gone. At 6 weeks old this baby has not had his/her first vaccine. It is imperative that this baby was seen by your vet 24 to 48 hours after you got him/her. Have you taken the puppy to your vet. Any questions you have you can ask them here, this forum is all about the dog, it's health and well being.

Yikes that's way to young. Yorkies should stay with their moms until 12 weeks. You can have issues otherwise. What breeder did you get her from? I would get her to the vet asap and get her signed up for pet health insurance asap. This pup should not be left alone at this age for more then an hour. She needs to stay warm and feed every couple of hours. Do you know the symptoms of hypoglycemia? Is she eating and drinking?

Yes I am now aware that she is too small 😔 When I bought her I was told she was 8 weeks yesterday I found out she was only six weeks. I have taken her to the vet and she told me to keep her indoors at all time until she is vaccinated. I do not know the symptoms of hypoglycemia other than lack of energy. I have another appointment with the vet on Tuesday. I just hope to learn as much as I can.

Unfortunately I cannot give you any good advice but I can let you know that we will be thinking of you and hoping for the best.

Hypoglycemia will make the puppy weak, tired, not want to eat and pale gums. If not treated it can cause seizures and death. Make sure the puppy does not get any vaccines until 8 weeks or its useless. Is she eating?

Get yourself some NutraCal and keep it on hand in case of hypoglycemia. It is a gel in a tub and you get it in any pet shop. Honey Nut Cheerios are a good snack to keep the blood sugar up as well. I gave them to my babies when we first got them. I still use them as treats. Kisses and hugs for her.

Thank you all very much. She is eating. I am giving her ceasers food as well as a little bit of solid food with water. I am not sure if this is the best food to give her but it was what the past owners were giving her. I will make sure to stop by the store today to pick up the gel. She is very playful. The only thing is she cried at night the first night I had her but now she sleeps with me and is doing okay. Thank you all very much.

Not a creat food but if she is eating it I would keep her on it for awhile.

Happy to know you took the puppy to the vet, I would limit any new ppl coming in contact with this baby until she has had her first vaccine, this means inviting ppl into your home to meet your new baby. NutraCal is very important to always keep on hand just in case her sugar should drop. Keep her on the same food she was on is best until she adapts to her new surroundings, and new human, you. Be very careful if you are letting her sleep in the bed with you. If she wanders during the night and falls off the bed she can be seriously hurt. Enjoy your little baby. Does she have a name.

PLEASE be very, very careful with this *extremely* vulnerable baby. Read / bookmark this thread.

DO NOT vaccinate early! Do you understand what you need to do with respect to vaccinations....? If not, read this thread and this one and make sure you understand. If you don't understand the vaccination schedule...ask questions.

The fact that you have vet care and have found this forum would indicate you are on the right track. Basically, you have a "premie" - not born too early but taken too early from mom.


Follow your vet's instructions very carefully and protect your puppy from exposure and injury. Feed carefully and often. Make sure the pup is peeing and pooping. You'll find lots of good information here, too. I wish you the best. :aimeeyork

Hypoglycemia
* Tips for Preventing Hypoglycemia in Yorkies’
NUTRI-CAL 3-5 times daily; PURE MAPLE syrup -a small amount with a oral syringe 1morn, 1eve.. This is a MUST for your new Yorkie!

Signs of Hypoglycemia in Yorkie Puppies

A Yorkie puppy experiencing hypoglycemia is very scary and may exhibit one or more of the following signs:
1. The gums are pale in places (whitish spots) or light pink may indicate blood sugar is dropping, give Nutri-cal to restore blood sugar level. If you do not have Nutri-cal, use maple syrup.
2. White gums: puppy needs quick attention to*avoid hypoglycemic coma.
3. Another sign may be vomiting greenish or clear bile. Foamy saliva may also appear*at mouth. Give Nutri-cal, then a protein based food as fast as possible.
4. More signs are: acting lethargic and listless, walking unsteady as if they were drunk, falling over,*shakiness and even laying on their side and being*unresponsive. This is a EMERGENCY and your Yorkie must be given some type of sugar immediately!
5. After giving maple syrup, wrap in blanket & keep warm. If a heating pad or elec blanket is available, set it*to low and use it. Wait 5 or 10 minutes for Yorkie to perk up. If no improvement - administer more sugar. When your Yorkie perks up, give a protein based meal to level out blood sugar.

EMERGENCY SITUATION: Take to a vet immediately if you see no signs of improvement or responsiveness, or if*puppy appears comatose. Rush to the vet for a glucose injection or a I.V to save their life!

Causes of Hypoglycemia: over-handling, not eating enough, changing food can cause diarrhea, resulting*in hypoglycemia.

I also want to share that when I first brought Muffin home (12 wks old), she had an attack from the stress of leaving her mom & siblings. She went into a coma after the first night and I called the breeder and she walked me thru reviving her since it was a weekend and my vet wasn't open. After she 'came around', she wouldn't eat anything so the breeder told my husband to run to the store and get Gerber2 chicken&gravy meals (in jars) for babies. Muffin ate that for 2 days until we knew she was stable enough to put her back on her kibble and Cesar's food. She only had one small episode a few weeks later, but was not in a coma, so now I make sure she gets NutriCal on a daily basis because of the vitamins she may not be getting in her foods. Take care of that baby. :)
