About to own my first Yorkie! Hello everyone! Hi I'm Hanny, I live in Southern California, retired, sweet gentle dog-loving husband who was literally never allowed to have a dog growing up. In fact until he married me 15 years ago had not even HELD a dog. We have a daughter who is 14, also a quiet and gentle kid who has her own pet, a cat who chooses to never leave my daughter's room, even though the house is open to her. Odd but they are an inseparable pair. I also have a couple cts, and 5 Tortoises who live outside, except for my newborns who live in a rubbermaid container right here in my home office/tea room, ( I am a tea blogger). So! Our 14 yr old Yorkie-chi rescue mix died last year, ( we always rescue older dogs in need) and we now just have Jen, a 12 yr old Chihuahua, very Zen, very mellow but loves other small dogs on rare occasion when we meet a little dog on one of our short and slow walks. We lucked out finding a Yorkie breeder who lives some distance away but who has a 2 year old Yorkie, AKC etc who is too big for her to breed at 9 pounds. I guess she already had one litter now those pups are going on 5 pounds at only 13 weeks old. So this wonderful woman who wants very much to do the right thing, decided to find this Yorkie mama a home, so she got her spayed and in a week or two the dog will be coming here. I am guessing, HOPING it will be this weekend. I'd love to be the caretaker for the second week of her recovery, hoping it might be a bonding time. In any case, name to be decided, but not the name the breeder/owner gave her. I am curious how she will interact with the cat, who will quickly show her the room is off limits even with the open door, and with my birds. I am prepared to give up a baby lovebird I've been hand taming the past month if it proves an issue, my canaries too as they are also in the house in a long and low cage. The new dog has been eating HALO brand Spot's Stew small bites for small breeds, so I bought a ten pound bag of that to start. My chi is on a prescription canned diet for sensitive stomachs that I get from my vet, so that will be another challenge to see how I handle feeding time. Being so used to having two senior dogs who ate the same food was a breeze, this may be a little harder! Anyway, sorry for the long intro! Thanks for reading and wish us luck! We are INSANELY EXCITED. |
Awww, CONGRATS!!! How exciting :)! |
Welcome to YT, what a awesome lady you are to be willing to give up your birds if must be for the sake of keeping this little girl. When I got my first yorkie I had two dwarf parrots that were let out of their cages when I came home from work. that all ended when I got this puppy. At 7 months old she would sit under their cages and salivate, she wanted to kill those birds lol. When they passed away I never got another bird again, the flapping of their wings would send the dog into a frenzy. I have heard of many members that have birds and yorkies and they have no problems, it all depends on the dog. so good luck and please keep us updated on your life with this new baby girl. |
Welcome. Some dogs couldn't care less about birds and small animals and others really care. I have one who dosen't care about our hamster and two who do. You might want to put like a baby gate on your daughters room because you don't want the cat to beat her up or hurt her. Keep in mind it might take a while for her to adjust but I'm sure you know that since you have had rescues. Hope everything works out well. |
The pup that wanted to kill my birds at age of 7 months old, at age 4 years old would play with my nieces ferret, go figure lol. |

Congrats! You will love her so much! I got my first Yorkie over 2 1/2 years ago. He was a 9 year old male who had been kept in a small corner for years. He wasn't abused, but was not given a lot of attention. I got him and showered him with love and watched him blossom. He is now almost 12 and a great guy! A few months after I got him I was given a 10 week old Yorkie mix puppy who is now 2 1/2 and is my trick dog. I have trained him to do over 20 tricks so far and working on more. He has a tail, which makes me so very happy. He is my pride and joy and I absolutely adore him. Then a month ago.... I received a facebook message from a friend who knew someone who was looking for a new home for their Yorkie. When they told me she had a tail, I was sold. LOL. She has seizures, but is on medicine to control them. She came into our lives and WOW, she is wonderful. She was a breeders dog prior to this other lady getting her, she only had her a year, she is 7 years old. She came into our life and I was expecting the others to be jealous, nope, they accepted her immediately. I expected a transition with her and she acted like she has always been with me. I hope your new girl settles in quickly. It took my first one a little bit to adjust, but he loved the attention so he did adjust fairly quickly. Nothing like my new girl though, she is laying across my chest right now as I type this while my 2 1/2 year old is on the back of the couch and the 12 year old is laying at my feet. This is what they are like when I get home from work. She is my smallest Yorkie at 6 lbs. The 12 year old is 7 lbs and my 2 1/2 year old is 10 lbs. I love the variety in size and color. Good luck and enjoy your new Yorkie. I am sure she will be wonderful!!!!! |
Thanks to everyone! |
