New Baby In The House Good Morning All! My husband and I are empty nesters who lost our precious 12 year old AKC Wirehair Fox Terrier, Digger, 3 years ago. Today, I'm excited to announce that we have a new baby in the house! Last week we welcomed Walter, AKA Waly, a precious 8 week old Yorkie baby, and we are in puppy LOVE! He will probably be 6-7 lbs at full growth. So, I have been reading and getting advice, here, for a few weeks. Currently, our biggest problems are potty training and puppy biting. He loves his crate, playing with his many toys, and chewing his bully sticks. |
When puppies leave there moms before 12 weeks they can have issues with biting, socialization and potty training. They learn those things for mom and there siblings that's why reputable breeders keep them until 12 weeks. With the biting you say no and put one of his toys in his mouth. I would be careful with the bullysticks when his adult teeth come in because they can break teeth. |
Congratulations on the new family member! Would love to see a photo! Puppies are so fun and yes sometimes a challenge but so easy to love ❤️ |

Grats on the little one |
Welcome to YT and congrats on your new baby boy. Had this little boy stayed with mom and litter mates until he was 12 / 13 weeks old you would not have these biting issues, mom and siblings teach when biting is to rough and hard. When he bites hard give a firm "no biting" and quickly give him a chew toy to bite. Yorkies are so cute, funny, entertaining, quirky and full of attitude, they will have you wrapped around their lil paw before you know it. Enjoy these puppy days, they grow so fast. |
Congrats on your new puppy. We too have a new puppy (16 weeks). Cute as a button but very challenging. She bites constantly. I have read and tried every solution. (No bite! Crating. Substituting a toy. Yelping like a litter mate, and MANY others.) Nothing works for her that I have found. I have successfully raised puppies before (Cocker, Danes but not a Yorkie) and I understand the puppy stage, but her behavior is escalating and she isn't scared of the Devil. She seriously growled and bit me today when I removed a plastic wrapper from her mouth. NOT a playful bite. We have school age grandchildren and I am concerned. She is very smart and can be sweet but I am hoping for some reassurance that this stage will pass and is not a temperament flaw. This isn't the type of behavior that I can tolerate in my home. Any help or suggestions? |

If your 16 week old puppy is biting and growling, this needs to be dealt with immediately. This kind of behaviour doesn't just pass nor is it a 'flaw'. You kind of need to put in 110% effort, patience, and persistence into training your little girl on a daily basis. She needs you to teach her what is good. Right now, all she knows are her natural puppy instincts. Otherwise, I can assure you that it could get worse and not better. Perhaps taking her to some training classes will help you get started on how to train your puppy. I can't stress enough that the training from you is a must. It's the only way you can establish yourself as the boss. Buy a clicker and some healthy treats. Praise all good behaviour and ignore all the bad ones (or use a firm NO!). And never call your puppy to "come" if she's done something bad. Personally, I've watched countless hours of training videos on Youtube, which I found very helpful. I would also get 8 to 10 variety of chew toys for her. And keep anything you don't want chewed up out of her access. |
Thank you for your helpful suggestions. I will be firm and fair with her. I guess I live in a fairy tale world. When she has received all of her puppy shots we will investigate puppy classes. Currently, canine influenza is on the rampage in our area so we are staying close to home. She is a very worthy puppy and doing well with housebreaking, fetch, come and sit. I'm not giving up, just need some direction. Biting is the one deal breaker with me. Thanks again! |
