When to Spay/Neuter? Conventional wisdom dictates that puppies should be spayed at six-nine months. Today someone told me that age range is far too soon and can cause health problems. She sent me articles about serious health problems which have been linked to early spay/neuter and advised 18/24 months as the best time to have the surgery performed. What do you think? |
We had our yorkie spayed at six months and before her first heat and never had any problem. In fact we had our last yorkie spayed before six months too and no problem with her either. We did not want to go through a first heat and our vet advised us the best way to do it. I am sure some of the breeders will help you on this but I think it is best to spay before first heat but that is my opinion. Hopefully someone can give you good advice. Susan |
All my females (8 in total) were spayed at 6 mos old. before their first heat and they were just fine, no health issues. Spaying a females before first heat is so very important to avoid Mammary tumors and Pyometra which can be deadly, I know because my first two females I did not have spayed, they were so tiny I didn't want them to "go under the knife". The first one at age 14 yo her uterus burst, puss went into her blood lines, she died a painful death, the 2nd one at 11 yo old I saw the symptoms, I rushed her to ER, they did a full hysterectomy, she lived for 3 months then passed. My first one I didn't know what the signs were, I thought she had UTI, it was a week end, the vet I was using then was closed, I took her in on Monday, she needed a full hysterectomy and was sent home that night. Everyday I saw she was failing, I called the vet, followed his instructions, my dog was dying before my very eyes, I ended up taking her to ER here she passed 30 minutes after I left her. I would never want anyone to loose their precious baby the way I lost my first one. Males can be neutered up to a year old, they do not face the dangers females face. But, some males start hiking their leg at an early age, so the longer you wait the more of a habit leg hiking becomes. To avoid this follow your vets advise on when to neuter. |
We're thinking of neutering our male puppy at about 8 months (in Sept or so), as he was small when we got him (and is still only less than four pounds). We also wanted to avoid the summer temperatures. He's already responding to females in heat by clamoring at the door, which is so sad to watch. We spoke with our vet in determining the age and time of year. |

Problems caused by early spaying is more of an issue with larger dogs than with smaller dogs. Research is being conducted on this at the UC Davis Veterinary College. Here is a long thread from Yorkietalk that goes over the pros and cons. The most recent information is towards the end of this thread: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...n-if-ever.html |
That is absolutely false. Spaying a female is best to do before there first heat so 6-8 months old and neutering I would say between 6-8 months old too. My older girl was spayed at 8 months before her first heat and has had no issues related to the spaying just her bad breeding background. My boy was neutered at 7 months and is e trembly healthy. They suggest big dogs wait a little longer but not small dogs and personally I don't think the research is 100% there on that either. I just wrapped up my vet assistant classes and stand strong about 6-8 months. Also yorkies sometimes have retained baby teeth so make sure to have the vet check for those when spaying or neutering. All of my yorkies have had to have a few baby teeth pulled. |

From this link: https://www.acvs.org/small-animal/mammary-tumors "Mammary tumors are more common in female dogs that are either not spayed or were spayed after 2 years of age. The risk of a dog developing a mammary tumor is 0.5% if spayed before their first heat (approximately 6 months of age), 8% after their first heat, and 26% after their second heat. " |
I believe the conventional wisdom on the best time to spay/neuter. When we buy our Yorkie, we will be having her spayed at 6 months. I posted this thread because I wanted to see if anyone else believed that spaying in the first year is unhealthy. |

When someone can show me scientific evidence that yorkies are harmed by early spay/neuter I might change my views. |

I know a Great Dane breeder that suggested that spay/neuter later helped for stronger bones later. But I don't really know if it makes a difference . I have fixed my pets before 7 months and have not seen issues and thought it was smart to do so I didn't have any accidents |

And like Linda (Ladyjane) says I have seen no build up of research on effects on s/n on toy breeds not to mention specific to Yorkies. How ever mid to large breeds are a different story imo. For Yorkies though I would happily s/n at 8mths old or so. Leg hiking is not a health issue - but a behaviour one, as is also temperament supposed benefits. Temp is both genetic and how you train and raise your pup. |
