Hello all!
 
Hi everyone! My husband and I are going to adopt a Yorkie next summer.
During this time, we will be comparing breeders while I do extensive research. We will also be searching for a great vet.

I joined this forum in the hopes of soaking up all of the information I can.

I have so many questions such as:

1.) Is having a puppy really just like having a human baby?
2.) Do Yorkies respond well to crate training?
3.) What tips do you have for potty training? At first, I plan on using pee pads at night and taking my puppy out several times during the day. When my puppy gains enough bladder control to hold it overnight, then I will slowly stop using pee pads at night.
4.) Is it essential for a Yorkie to sleep in the same room as her owners?
5.) Do you prefer male or female Yorkies? Why?

Puppies take a lot of work so yes it can be like having a human baby. Make sure your breeder is keeping the pups until at least 12 weeks. All my yorkies have been crated at night it is much safer for them. The crate needs to be in your bedroom where they can see you from the crate it is not fair to leave them alone in another room when they were just taken from there mom and siblings. Sometimes it can take about two weeks to get them used to it so you might not get a lot of sleep. Training to do both outside and potty pads can be confusing for them. I used to prefer females but last spring I got my first boy and he is a huge cuddle bug and the sweetest thing ever.

I've read that it's best to keep a puppy in the bedroom and wake up at night to take a puppy outside for toileting. Lots of conflicting info because I've also read that crate training in a different room and pee pads at night are both fine. :confused: Either way, I'm prepared not to get a lot of sleep.

I'm so glad that you set up this library of information! Very helpful.
Since I don't want our puppy upstairs, I'm going to keep the crate in the living room and simply sleep on a couch nearby for the first few weeks. I'm also going to set my alarm to take her out at night.
