Retractable leashes Just venting. Retractable leashes aren't leashes IMHO. I am so tired of going on walks or to parks that post leashes required to encounter owners with dogs who are "leashed" but not under the owners direct control. They approach other dogs, people, picnics, gardens, etc. with their owners smartly looking on as their leashed dog invades, intrudes, and poses any manner of concern. Rarely do they retract the leash but rather reassure you their dog is "okay." Well, I'm not okay with that. I guess ordinances need to specify the length of the lead. :thumbdown:confused::mad: Unfortunately, I have a family member who IS one of those owners who lectures me that it is my problem and my responsibility to approach each owner with the straying "leashed" dog. Ugh. Thank you for listening. |
I can't stand them. I hate them unless I'm like in field with no one around. |
I keep my boy on a short leash when we walk. Just going outside in the yard I don't lock the leash so he can roam a bit around the yard |
I DESPISE the retractable leashes to no end, ugh!!!! |
I don't remember where or who told me about the retractable leashes snapping and hitting people or dogs.....some times in the eyes.!!!...just saying..... ...perhaps was my ophtamologist...can't remember.. Ughhhhh |
I sometimes use a retractable leash but never let it run out to the end. Mine is 25 feet, I let out about 20 feet, and that all depends on were we are. I have been using them for eons. I had an incident just 2 days ago by my house with some woman using one. Some how the dog was running all over my lawn, this women had a stroller with a baby in it and a 4 / 5 yo kid with her. She leaves the kids in the road, I see her running up my driveway trying to catch her little dog with the entire retractable in her hands. Thank GOD for her that she got her dog, behind my house is the woods, no way would she leave her children in the road to chase her dog through the woods. Using retractable leash needs your full attention with no distractions. I prefer my 6 foot leash for better control but I always take the retractable along. |
Sammi has both short and retractable if we are going somewhere I know lots of people and dogs are going to be I use his short leash if I am going somewhere more isolated I do use his retractable that said I keep him fairly close to me and never let the lead go out to full extension I too cannot stand anyone who does not have control of their dog I was on a walk with Sammi and a lot bigger dog was on a fully extendable retractable lead and came running up to Sammi growling etc I said to the owner you need to keep your dog under control and I got a mouthful of the most foul language I ever heard So I think it's ownership responsibility whatever lead your animal is on The one thing that really annoys me is people who do t leash their dogs at all |
Unfortunately, I can tell ER tales of lost and mutilated fingers and hands from those things!! |

That can be said about water ski ropes as well |
Retractable leashes have pros and cons. I use them on a daily basis because we live on 4 acres and I don't always trust them off leash and long lines are cumbersome and get tangled etc. So for me they are a GOD SEND for night time potty breaks when they need their space etc but I need to keep them under control. I have a few laying around. I have two 26ft cord ones, I have two 16ft tape leashes (which are a bit safer, IMO). To me, they're just like any other tool. They can be abused and misused in the wrong hands. I never use a retractable in a public space or anywhere there will be crowds and other people. I've perfected walking 2 dogs on 26ft retractables. Other people are not so intelligent. |

I initially hated them but have come to see there's a place for them in the right circumstances. The main thing is you have to have control over your dog. If your dog is on a 15-foot retractable leash and there are things 10 feet away that can get him or her into trouble, then no. In fact, several years ago, a guy riding a skateboard behind a pitfall on a retractable leash attacked my short-leashed Chessie. Animal control cited him for not being in control even though the dog was "on leash." At my insistence, the dog was classified as Level 1, which brought them all kinds of restrictions for at least a year. They also paid my $1,800 vet bills. That said, I dogsat a Havanese puppy who was WONDERFUL on a retractable. I only used it in wide-open fields when no one else was around, but what a great way to get a puppy some exercise without having to jog with it or risk going off-leash. On a short leash, he pulled and whined and needed serious training that I didn't have time to do while dog-sitting, but on the retractable he ran to his heart's content and switched directions when he got to the end. |

A lot of doggy events I have noticed say no retractable leashes but some people still use them. I have seen a couple dogs break them and then be running free. |
