Is this a Yorkie, and what type is it?

Hi! I am new to this forum and not currently a Yorkie owner, but I would like to get one in the near future. They are adorable. I found this photo and think he is a Yorkie with a short haircut. I am wondering if anyone can help me identify it and give me any information. I know there are different types but I am very uninformed which is why I joined this site. Here he is :)

OMG, that is the most adorable puppy I have ever seen. I would say this is NOT a yorkie as he does not have a yorkie face or coloring, I will guess it is a mix pup, and what it may be mixed with I am clueless, but that is one cute lil baby. Google Yorkshire terriers, there will be tons of pictures that show what a pure bred yorkie looks like, from puppy to adult. Read about their requirements, personality etc. to make sure a yorkie is the best breed for you.

I know, isn't he the cutest thing, I love him. So if he is a Yorkie mix I may never get one like him :( I was hoping he was a Yorkie with a different haircut. Thank you for your help, and I will continue to search!

even with as concerned as I am with the post I mad ,I had to answer. HOLEE. GRACIOUS!!! THAT IS ADORABLE!!!! I've found Chewie's companion, hehe. Too bad husband isn't on board.

I'm pretty sure that's not a full yorkie and even if some how it was it would be breed poorly. There really are not different kinds of Yorkies. I encourage you to look for a reputable breeder if you want a yorkie.

When you say 'type', what does that mean? Yorkies or mix you mean?

Thank you all for your help! I thought that there were different 'types' of Yorkies, like a toy or a teacup, and then Yorkies that are bigger, about 7 lbs. Also, as someone else on this post said, possibly a Pomeranian/Yorkie mix. I'm trying to learn what I can about them, and I did contact a couple of breeders in my area who are waiting for a litter. Thank you for your comments :)

Nope a yorkie is just a yorkie. Only bad breeders use the word teacup and breed mixes.

I actually disagree on your opinion about a yorkie face or colouring. I've come to understand that yorkies, and I am speaking about purebred yorkies, as having a great amount of variance in their looks, even amongst show dog yorkies. I've seen yorkies with more of a pointed foxy type of look due to the shape and way their muzzle is, some with a flatter and wider type of muzzle, wide-set eyes, not so wide-set eyes, squarish type of head, more rounded head, large eyes, small eyes, very down face, some not so down face, dark colouring, light colouring, pointed ears, more rounded ears, etc. etc. I just spent the weekend at a dog show, and it was quite amazing to see how different yorkies can be.

I have a boy who many people ask me what he's mixed with because he's so different than the mental schema that people have of what a yorkie looks like. People a bit more familiar with breeding and genetics tell me he's a throwback, and he may very well be considering how different he is than his parents and littermates as well as the dogs in his pedigree.

I guess the point I'm making is that there isn't one type of yorkie face or colouring.

That's not really what she meant she was saying teacup and toy in a later post. There still is not multiple types of yorkies they just have different traits. I can not speak for the show world but in the pet world there are yorkies that look very different from poor breeding and not breeding yorkies that look like yorkies.

I sometimes warn people that if a breeder is putting a great deal of emphasis on how super tiny the pups are, then the breeder might be more concerned with the size than the health of the pups.

I think it's a mix.

But coloring alone doesn't make a yorkie. In rare cases, some just have the gold color.

I had a silky that was all goldish.

Thank you, I do hope that I can find one that looks like him, I love that face. I am hoping to get one that is somewhat bigger than a 'teacup' size, I would get worried about it getting lost, or hurt in the house, so small and fragile.

This looks like my adopted dog which is yorkie and maltese. We love him so much!!!! Because he is a mixed breed, the vet thinks he is a litter tougher health wise than a pure breed.

It's actually not true that mixed breed dogs are healthier then pure breed dog. My vet even owns and show frenchies.

That depends. I've had a lengthy discussion with a professor of genetics at a university on this topic. He had a different opinion, and he backed it up with plenty of science that was a little bit over my head. Me, personally, I'm uncertain. I kinda flip flop on my thoughts on this issue. But I am certain that there are a number of more considerations that a breeder of purebred dogs needs to take into account. I just don't know though. It's just one of those things.

I guess I've just been in the mood lately of arguing. Lol. Sorry everyone. But seriously though, that's a huge topic that probably deserves its own thread. I imagine it's been discussed before. I have purebred dogs and health was a huge concern because I know people who have had to go to specialty clinics. And not only is it a huge thing in terms of money, but emotionally with a sick dog is very difficult. All breeders definitely should breed for health. That I think should really be a top concern.

I don't think it has anything to do with full bred or mix I think it has to do with the breeder and breeding. I have heard of many mixed breed dogs going to specialist and I have seen them there. A full breed has a chance of getting any of the things that the breed is susceptible to but when you have a mixed breed there are multiple breeds there so they have a chance of what each breed is susceptible to. Like I said my vet who is amazing has frenchies and shows them. I just don't think there really is science to back the claim.

My own personal experience, over the years I have had Poodles, mini Schbauzers, then 4 yorkies, all very healthy until they reached their senior years. My last yorkie was 17 years old when she went to Rainbow bridge. As a kid I always heard that mutts (today known as designer dogs) were healthier then pure breed dogs. I believe that to be a myth. But, that is just my opinion.

That's my opinion too. We had mixes growing up and the lab mix had to be put to sleep at 8 for a disc breaking in her back and she was paralyzed and it was before they could do surgery. Then a beagle mix who started having seizures and possibly eat up with cancer at 9 or 10. The other mix lived until 15.
