Help I'm stressed and need opinions/advice
 

I am no longer breeding, but recently had just one litter. I sold one puppy and kept two. I didn't advertise until 12 weeks because he was tiny and the Mom was still nursing. I sold the puppy for $1,100.00 which included a very generous puppy package (all new with tags - bed, carrier, puppy pads, food, treats, chew bones, brush, toenail clippers, nutrical, about 7 toys close to $150.00) and it also included a paid puppy package from my vet for remaining vaccinations, rabies tag, registration, microchip,etc.

Now the stress - she just contacted me and wants to return the puppy after two and half weeks. He was very close to being completely potty trained on pads and outdoor. The two I kept are doing very well. She doesn't work, but she recently had a pacemaker put in (prior to getting puppy) and feels that it is too much for her.

My concerns - even though the vaccinations were paid for she has not followed through in getting them and the puppies I have won't have their final vaccine for two more weeks so I am uneasy about reintroducing him into my household since he only had one vaccine at 9 weeks, due another at 13 and 17 and he is 15 weeks today.

I am also concerned that all my hard work housetraining might have been lost and worry that it will cause the two I kept to regress.

I also hate putting the puppy through the stress of re-homing. I know she has been sleeping with the puppy in her bed which is fine I have always done that too so that is why I included a carrier in the puppy package so he wouldn't fall off the bed. The problem is that since I kept two puppies I am kenneling them at night and not sure if he will be happy going back to the schedule he had here.

I want to be fair to us both, but do not know how much money I should return or if I should even take the chance bringing him back into my house. I also don't know how much I will need to discount the price to sell him quickly at this age since many buyers believe 8 weeks is the time a puppy should be sold. I still have contact information for many people who responded to the ad that I can send messages to, but am worried that they will feel something is wrong with him since he is being returned. I also am not 100% sure about his health beings he has not been in my care for over two weeks.

I have always tried to treat people the way I would like to be treated, but I would never ask to return a healthy puppy after two weeks just because I changed my mind.

As the breeder in my opinion it is your responsibility to take him back if she doesn't want him but I don't know that I would refund the money. I certainly wouldn't want him staying with her if she didn't keep up with the shots. You could always take him straight to the vet for a parvo test and if clear he should be fine to come back to your house. Most people prefer puppies at 8 weeks because they don't know better. Yorkies should be kept until 12 weeks no matter what other people think.

I don't have a problem taking him back. I told her right away I would. It was only later when I found out no vaccines have been given and then concern for my two. I just didn't know how much money I should keep. I also know I'm going to feel sorry for him and not want to resell him. I had to beg my husband to keep two and he is not going to be happy if I keep three. All the years I bred I never kept a puppy so my intentions for this litter was not to sell any, but I really thought she would only have one, maybe two if I was lucky.

I just received another text saying thank you for being so understanding but I am trying to figure out how I can keep him and think doggie lessons might be the answer. He is a very sweet puppy and the prettiest in the litter. I gave her that one because he was calm and didn't bite hands hard so I'm not sure exactly what she means, but in any event he can't go to any doggie classes until fully vaccinated and they don't teach house training.

Thank you. I don't know why but it never occurred to me to get a parvo test, but that would put me more at ease bringing him back around the other two.

Could you explain to her about the vaccinations and have her keep him long enough to get the vaccinations as you don't want to endanger your two pups? If vaccinations were included in the puppy package, she shouldn't have any problem with it. It would only require a little more time before refunding a portion of her money back and taking the pup back.

My parents are in Oklahoma and looking for a puppy....would that help?

Oklahoma is a long way from here and I dont ship. She has decided she doesn't want to give him up. Im glad that she has bonded with him now I just need to stress how important vaccinations are. Dont really understand the delay especially since they are paid for. Still not 100% sure I wont get him back though.

Perhaps the problem with no vaccinations is driving to the vet, some seniors have that problem, myself included. Maybe some help there would resolve the problem. Just a thought. ;)

I would be very concerned about the no vaccine thing. What is her excuse for that?

Her 20 year old grandaughter lives with her and her daughter was staying with her for 3 weeks to help get puppy settled so I don't think driving is the issue and even if the vacs were not prepaid money wouldn't be an issue. I really should offer to pick up the dog though and take it in just in case, but don't want to seem controlling. Still haven't heard anything else. I'm thinking it's a possibility she rehomed the puppy since even if she knew I would give most of her money back she is in a financial position that money wouldn't be her first concern.

I would be livid if she rehomed him. Maybe you should just stop by to see how things are going?

She just sent a text wanting to know if I wanted to go to the appointment and if so what time would be best for me. I told her to let me know when it is and i will meet her there or pick her up if she didnt feel like driving.

8 weeks is far too early with small breed puppies. Most breeders hold their puppies until they are 12 weeks old.

Take your puppy back. Think about what is best for this baby. It really doesn't matter that he didn't have the extra shots. He probably has enough for his immune system.

Tell your buyer your contract (you had one right?) says non refundable deposit. When you rehome him, you can refund whatever you sell him for.

He was over 12 weeks when he went to a new home. I always keep mine that long. The contract does mention that for any reason they are unable to provide a home I will take him back, but doesn't mention any financial issues. I vaccinate at 9, 13 and 17. His 2nd vaccine was due the next, but since I give my own vaccines I thought it best to get started with a vet since I thought we would meet the following day for a wellness check. I regret not giving the 2nd vaccine before he left but hindsight is 20/20.
