Traveling issue with Sophie I am hoping we can solve the issue we are having with Sophie. We sold our gas motor home and bought a new diesel rig. Sophie loved the gas rig but is terrified of the new one. The new one has air breaks and makes noise and we were on the road for 2 days getting the rig home and both days she would pant the entire time we were on the road (5 hours 1st day 6 hours the next). Once the motor is not running she stops panting and loves it. I would like any suggestions on how to keep her calm while we are on the road. We sometimes travel several days in a row before stopping for a few nights. |
Maybe lots of treats and praise. You could also try rescue remedy or even a thunder shirt. |

I would predict she'll adjust and in the meantime, I agree with these suggestions. Our little girl was a bit suspicious of our motorhome initially and once all 3 of us got the hang of it (me, my husband and our pup) she'd start asking to hit the road! She can recognize the jingle of the MH keys from the back of the house! Time to head out! |
I have never had any luck with the Rescue Remedy, but my Mom said the thunder vest works for hers. I know it is hard to watch her pant, but I do think she will get use to it. I know people who live by airports and trains that never even hear them pass. Have you tried crating her so she feels more secure? |
My Jackson is similar. My dad has an RV. He never had a huge issue with it when we would do short trips (2-3 hours). When we drove to FL from MD, he never relaxed. He panted, paced, shook, wouldn't settle the entire drive. It was stressful for all of us. I tried Rescue Remedy, calming treats/sprays, etc, nothing worked. He is a food hound too (like he will do ANYTHING for food) and he wouldn't even take cheese or chicken to try to desensitize him to it. It was definitely the loud noises that freaked him out. Once we stopped moving, all was 100% fine. When we got to FL where we were staying for over a week... I called my vet and she called a prescription for Xanax. It didn't help him at all. Once we got home, spoke with the vet about it, we use Trazodone now with great results. It doesn't knock him out or make him out of it at all, it just eases his anxiety and he's able to go lay down. We hardly ever have to use it but I always keep a few pills on hand just in case of a stressful event coming up (fireworks, etc, do it too). I'd rather see him calm & relaxed on some medicine than panicking for so long. |
I would try some cbd oil or treats |
Thanks everyone for great information. I will talk with the vet before our next trip. |
