Our boy has become super stubborn, 1 year old 1 Attachment(s) Our boy Chewy was quite easy to train as a puppy, especially getting into his crate at night. We got it to the point where we'd make a fuss about going to bed, open his crate and he'd get in and sleep all night. Great. Now though he is just over a year old and does not want to get in. When we start mentioning bed he will curl up into a ball and growl if you go near him. Get too close and he gets quite vicious. Is this normal behaviour? I don't want to give him and let him sleep where he wants as I'm worried he will think he runs the place and will stop responding to all our claims. He's still cute though. |
Is there a reason he must stay confined in a crate at night...? He may not like being in small spaces for extended times...many do not. Why not get an Xpen or an Iris pen and give him a bit of space. |
Crate issues Is his crate in your bedroom or out in some other part of the house? Has he outgrown his crate and needs a larger one or does he need different bedding? Our experiences have varied between dogs. Our mini-dachshund had her crate in her pen so during the day if we were gone she would be in her pen with the crate door open and she always went in and at bedtime we closed the door. She was fine with that. Our yorkie loves to be in our room in her crate but she is afraid of the dark (we discovered) so there is a night light. She has a day time pen for if we're gone with her food and water (door stays open when we are home), a bed and a chew. We have had to replace the bed/pad in her crate a couple of times because it wears down. |
If this seems sudden is there anything that could have scared him? If you can't think of anything something health related might be bothering him. Him getting vicious is this new or has he always done this but with different things? If it's completely new I would be leaning toward something health related. If he checks out ok by a vet I think I would consult a trainer or a behavioralist. I always would give mine a treat when they got into there crate. |
You might try putting a high-value treat in the crate at bedtime to encourage him to go in on his own. Maybe you can retrain him to like the crate that way. We never have any problems getting our Bella to go in her crate at night--she goes in on her own. |
Casie was the opposite. As she's growing older, she now dashes into her crate at night (even if I close the crate door on her - purely because I found her pooping and eating as a midnight snack. Yuck!) I always throw yummy treats into her crate for fun. She loves it. |
Sounds like he's just flexing his little independent muscles, as it were...I'd give him a firm 'no' to the growling, for sure, but I agree with Wiley's Mom insofar as allowing him a little room. Chewy is a beautiful boy and looks like he is Mr. Personality-Plus, combined with smart, stubborn, mischievous, totally fun and probably quite the Lady's man!!! What a debonair little dude!!!! |
