Newbie...only live puppy 2 Attachment(s) Hello... My puppy was born mid May and I am so excited! This makes her three weeks old approximately. I'm concerned that she is the only survivor of a two puppy litter. Experienced AKC certified breeder, so I guess I am not going to freak out. I guess I really don't get to choose pick of the litter....lol Anyone experienced a situation like this? |
Choosing a puppy Quote:
We have purchased 2 dogs (a mini dachshund and our yorkie) over the years from breeders and never experienced a situation like this. I would recommend that you follow the procedures you would normally follow. First, check out the breeder, breeding history, the parents of this pup. See what AKC has to offer in that regard. Ask for references. Then when the puppy is old enough treat the process as if you are choosing.....health, temperament, breed standards that matter to you. Spend time with the parents. Spend time with the puppy. And decide if it is a good match. It's an important and emotional process so you want to make sure that this is the right companion for you. The hardest decision will be if you have to walk away and start looking for your puppy all over again. I wish you the best. |
Hello and welcome to YT Cute little girl |
I would also make sure she is part of the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America. The AKC is great in the fact that it means your getting a pure pup but they don't do inspections and things like that. The YTCA writes all the rules for yorkies so it a great place you can go check them out at ytca.org. My only concern would be what caused the others death and if she will be socialized enough not having other pups around. Also she shouldn't come home until 12 weeks. |
Thanks for the input. I believe the other puppy died because it was too small. The breeder has another litter of dachshunds that I pray she lets play with mine while in the growing fast stage. I have read that singleton litter pups can have behavioral issues when older. UGH... I hate this.:animal-pa |
Hard to say why the other puppy died, could have been in the birth canal too long, but I don't think it means that yours is unhealthy. I too have always heard single pups have problems, but I have a 5 year old singleton who is the joy of my life. She is fine with other dogs and has absolutely no behaviorial issues at all. |
