Hey I have a quick question.

Our dog has been vomiting for the past 10minutes a bit annoyed(at myself-- I shouldn't had given in to her temptation) and just upchucked a tomato chunk.

I cut 1/4 piece of a tomato-- I took out the seeds, and I gave the bottom part.

She's ate tomato before... but she just threw it up this time. Last time it was when I was eating a sub and the tomato fell off the sandwhich and she got to it before I did. She ate it that time and nothing happened to her.


But now she was licking the floor and just upchucked it all along with some gross white liquid... I assume some form of bile?

Yeah, the white liquid is likely mucous and bile and stomach acids. And yes, they can eat tomato...so who knows why the gag reflex was triggered...?

Well she does have a sensitive stomach and the whole night she was licking the floor(even after she puked) and kept trying to cough something out... She stopped by now...

Guess that's something I am crossing off the feed list.

Maybe it was just too big a chunk which triggered the gag reflex. Sometimes they just swallow it whole instead of chewing it

I read tomatoes are not good for dogs to eat.

Sounds like she was having some reflux there. If that continues or you see more signs of it, you'd want to give Pepcid 2x a day.

I doubt itll happen again. Only happens when I feed her anything "Weird".

I'm late to this thread, but tomatoes are not inherently poisonous to dogs. Our Bella loves them, so we sometimes give her a half of a cherry tomato as a treat. (We used to give her whole cherry tomatoes, but when she popped them open with her teeth, half of the time the seeds would go on the carpet :D.) I agree with you, it could have been because it was something "weird" that she was not used to. Or, the piece could have been too big, and the tomato skin got caught trying to exit her stomach so she threw it back up.

Vomiting from acid reflux often happens in the morning on an empty stomach. Bella had that, so we feed her her regular food just before bedtime, and again first thing in the morning and she is fine. I would not recommend giving antacids (or any other human medicine, prescription OR over-the counter) except under a vet's recommendation and supervision. In Bella's case, the vet said that I *could* have given 1/4 of an omeprazole pill once a day, but that was not necessary since the more frequent feedings stopped the problem.

I didn't cut it into tiny pieces because usually she chews her food but maybe she didn't. I just gave her a slice. I already took the seeds out and washed it with cold water.


As for the acid reflux, she just has a sensitive stomach. I.e. makes really soft / loose stool if she eats something too odd...

Yeah, I'm guessing that it was the tomato skin, then. The skins are tougher and less digestible than the flesh. I'll give Bella apples slices too, but I always remove the peel. She can easily chew the crunchy apple flesh, but the peels not so much.

I remember reading it's when the tomato is green that it's bad for them but when ripe and red is fine. But I figure you're giving red ripe ones anyways, but it's something to keep in mind. I agree it might need to be smaller pieces. My girl loves cherry tomatoes, and has had no problems when I feed her some. I would crush them for her or give her several halves of one.

Well I mean, if I wouldn't eat a tomato that's green, I sure wouldn't give one to someone else. But yeah I get what you mean. I didn't give her a full tomato, just a slice. She's been fine lately.

Some ppl like myself grow tomatoes in their yard or patio tomatoes on their deck as I do. Dogs if not watched like a hawk get into and will eat anything even green tomatoes. My now passed girl Matese at one time plucked a green tomato off the vine of my patio plant.

So it does happen.

To avoid it happening again my plants are put on high plant stands.
