Hi all! I am new to this forum And new to the Yorkie world. I have had dogs before but never a yorkie and I am having problems with house breaking him. He's a 5 mos old 8 pound pup. We got him about 2 Months ago And he was doing great! All of sudden this week He has started pooping in the house. More now then when we first got him. I can't think any changes that have caused thus. Any suggestions would be appreciated. |
Welcome to YT. Never give a puppy free roam of house until they are 100% potty trained. Keep him confined to a small area blocked off from the rest of the house or supervise very closely in the same room you are in. Put him on a food and potty schedule. Feed same time everyday, every dogs needs are different, it's a trial and error for a day or two at when he will have to pee or poop, start off with 30 minutes after he has finished eating take him outside to potty, even if he already made inside take him out anyway. If he made before the 30 minutes then you know that's to long, take him out 20 minutes after he eats. Potty time must be the same time every day. Dogs are creatures of habit, he will learn what time he eats and what time he goes out to potty. Patience, consistency, treats and lots of praise when he gets it right are key factors in all training. |

Our dog we did a schedule but now she doesn't even need a schedule, is this just a thing my dog does or do dogs end up getting lax on it? I just make sure to take her out every 2-4 hours. |

Thank you Thanks for your reply. I am starting over. Frustrating because he was doing so well just using the doggy door but I guess he had me fooled! Lol. I Am home all day but run a daycare out if my Home that he is. Locked out of. I can still interact with him but he had earned free run of the house and now I'm taking it away again |
Unfortunately that can happen, and retraining has to start at scratch, he's still a baby at 5 months old. When I had puppies because they could not go out doors until they had all their vaccines I had to pad train them first. They were confined to a small area with their bed, food, water, pad, and toys, at 5 months old they were 100% pad trained with NO accidents, and were given free roam of entire home. They had all their vaccines and out door training began. Fed at same time every morning, walked at same time every day. At 7 months old they were 100% house broken with no accidents in the house. Now that I am home all day I can see where potty training can be difficult if you're home all day with a puppy. Yes, restrict his free space, praise like crazy and give treats when he goes outside, if he eats kibble you can use that as treats, reward for going outside. Patience is a must, remember, he's still a baby. Good luck |
Sometimes you have to start over and be more struck. Limit the areas he is allowed to go in. If you catch him going potty give a firm no and when he goes in the right spot lots of praise and a treat! Some times you have to step up how often you take them out. |
[QUOTE=matese;4707136].... it's a trial and error for a day or two.... Just had to interject here, because I laffed out loud when I saw those words, with my pups potty training, which has been a lotta trial and mostly error! (sorry, had to do it) ;) |
