I am rather cautious so I know what you mean. Neutral ground would be nice-- just have to find a good place where no distractions occur and just me and one other person plus the dogs. |
When ever I bought a baby home, I would set it on the floor, my older girl / girls would come to sniff what the momma bought home, once the puppy started to hop around the older one / ones would jump up on the sofa. That is where they stayed. From time to time the older one /ones would come to sniff her, but basically they stayed on the sofa. It took my older girls 6 weeks to 2months before they would stay on the floor and play. I kept the baby gated, away from the older ones when I was not home. I gave my older ones more attention to show them they were still # 1. Always make your older one first. First to be greeted when you come home, first to eat, first one to get a treat. Puppies cannot be introduced to first dog on neutral grounds as puppy has not had any vaccines, they have to be introduced in your home. I don't even advise your yard, there are squirrels, chipmunks, field mice, birds, all have been in your yard which can cause a unvaccinated puppy to become ill. |

In my case, I had my first dog meet my new puppy indoors at the dog show where I met my breeder. Note that I brought home both my dogs when they were 5 months old (20 weeks), so they were both fully vaccinated. Hopefully you won't be bringing your new puppy home until it is at least 12 to 15 weeks old as this is a crucial time for the puppy to learn things from it's birth mother (for example, there's often less biting issues when the puppy stays with its mother until 12 - 15 weeks old). |

As for the time being spent with it's mother, I hope the breeder I know would allow that-- I think he will from the sound of it he's an excellent breeder so I would assume he wouldn't mind. Would probably help cut down confrontation from the puppys' part. I want to look for a healthy dog so that is why I am taking my time and letting my chickens hatch first. At the time being I'll be able to save up more for other things like pet insurance a comfy pet bed that wouldn't be destroyed by the new pup and easily washed/cleaned, essential stuff for it like tooth brush, doggy toothpaste, dog crate, etc. Pet insurance, etc. I need to save for the extra vet bills. I know the first year they have more care. I forget how much stuff is so I basically wanted to save up quite a lot before I even got it. It wouldn't take too long. Just always like keeping stuff in reserve. |
