Fleas Ok I need some advice... I'm worried about all the chemical pills for flea prevention so I have been reading about a home made flea powder. It has food grade diatomaceous poder, neem powder yarrow powder and eucalyptus oil in it. Sounds like it will work. Is any one else worried about all of the chemical that are dogs have in and on them aside from me. Need advice if I'm right in my thinking help help |
'Natural" stuff can be if not more dangerous then the medicines that have had actual tests and stuff done on them. |
Fleas Having worries with my babies flea medicine . (Trifexis ) My smallest baby started throwing up just 20 minute's after taking it . She is 4 pounds and vet said to give her the full pill . I had been only giving her 1/2 a pill . Thinking of going herbal instead of the trifexis. Need help. Really need good advice |
Our 5.5 lbs Yorkie took well to Revolution for flea control. It's topical - you just crack open the plastic vial and pour it in between the shoulder blades on the back. I only needed one dose and you can bathe them anytime after a day. Maybe you can ask whether your vet can prescribe this one if she's vomiting on the one you tried? |

My problem with diatomaceous earth, even the food grade, is that it is silica. How safe is it for our dogs' lungs and mucous membranes? I don't know. Essential oils -- I've read a lot anecdotal evidence of negative and deadly side effects in dogs. It's very easy to get the combinations or dosages wrong. Tea tree oil is an example. Some sources say to never use it on a pet, but there are many products on the market for pets that contain it. I'm not happy about putting chemical pest preventatives on my dogs either. Teddy reacts badly to the ones we have tried, but he is also highly allergic to flea bites. I understand your dilemma. It's something I wrestle with every summer. I'm still searching for a good solution for him. |

We use a topical, Activyl- not crazy about it but fleas are year around here. Works like magic! I use minksheen shampoo which has cedar oil etc.. I think it helps. I tried neem oil shampoo- really irritated my sensitive ones skin. |

I don't give flea/tick year-round so I try to 'lessen' the chemical use if I can. I also space it out 45 days usually. Most of these medications can technically last that long but most say to do every 30 days to make it easier on people to get on a schedule and not forget to give it. I've been using Nexgard (an oral chew prevents ticks and fleas) and recently Simparica -- similar drug. I typically only give it March through September/October here in MD. We've had a pretty warm winter here though so I did give it this year in Feb. Heartworm meds are given year round though, just to be safe. I use Heartguard. I agree that natural can sometimes be just as dangerous. IMO it just depends on the risk of fleas/ticks where you are located. If I lived in a colder climate, I probably would hardly give it at all. I do use Vetriscience flea/tick spray if I know I am going to an area heavy with ticks and want extra protection against the nasty critters. |
flea busters is good stuff, never have a flea issue, its a lot like D earth but it stays in your carpet. I have use it for years, the company comes and does it. The only thing that will make it un usable is if your carpet is shampooed or gets wet. The process is messy but it works. I have chester go to the groomer when they apply it. |
I use Flea busters, it works really good, it will last a year unless your carpet gets wet |

We use Revolution and it has always worked well. I like that it is dished by weight. The issue is not just fleas - it is also heartworm protection that needs to be done. If we are hiking I use a Seresto that I keep in a zip lock bag the rest of the time. |
