In search of a harness for walking
 
Are there any harnesses I should stay away from when purchasing one for my new pup?

The only caution I would give is to make sure the harness holds your pup securely, especially if your pup is an escape artist.

If your pup is a puller, make sure the harness does not put any pressure on the neck.

Supervise your pup with any new harness to make sure your pup doesn't try to chew the harness off. Always store harnesses out of reach when not in use to prevent it from becoming a chew toy.

I don't know of any specific ones to stay away from, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the buddy belt harness. It's what I use. And if it's properly fit, it's just an amazing harness. A great design, no pressure on the neck area, impossible to escape out of. Great harness.

I second the buddy belt. Both of mine have the leather ones we got from Maximo. Ours are several years old and are holding up very well.

Popular choices are Buddy Belt, Puppia and Gooby. They have a lot to offer. :) Kristin (Maximo) is the BEST to get Buddy Belts from! :)

Just looked up the Buddy Belt, it will not dig in under the front legs? I was looking at this one online because it looks comfortable

I would get the Buddy Belt - I have it for all of mine. I have 4 dogs and 5 buddy belts. Oopsie. :p

The leather eventually softens, but regardless does not dig into the legs if fitted properly. It's perfect, I use the Buddy Belt for both my babies.

When I first got them though, I used the Easy Walk harness (from Pet Smart) that hooked from the front to train them for walks.

The harness is made of soft leather. Some colors are even softer than others from the start, super soft. My boys are very comfy in theirs, and they wear the "stiffer" black most of the time. As Canana wrote, they soften even more with use, molding to the shape of the body.

Some dogs will be more sensitive. There are liners available, but really, they aren't necessary for the soft as butter editions.

If your baby is still a puppy, not full grown, yes, you would have to move up in size over time.

The Buddy Belt is a great investment though -- my boys' primary black ones are 6 and 7 years old with lots of walking mileage and still look fantastic.

I resisted buying a buddy belt for a long time for two reasons. I'm too cheap to spend that much, and I like to see and try it on in person first. But after looking everywhere and buying several harnesses, I couldn't find one that didn't make him cough and that he couldn't get out of. So I bit the bullet and ordered one. They are wonderful! They put no pressure on his neck at all, and so far he hasn't gotten his legs out of it. It's very soft and doesn't rub.

Buddy belt
 
I would like to try the buddy belt for my 5 month old siblings. I am walking them every couple of hours for potty training and would like for them to be able to wear a harness all day and for sure, I would take it off at night. For those of you that recommend the buddy belt, would the puppies be comfortable all day?

Sometimes I leave the Buddy Belt on my boys for a couple hours when I know we are going out again soon. They are perfectly comfortable. The only concern leaving any harness on all day would be if your dog is a chewer and inclined to chew at the harness.

Thank you. They are chewers, but chew on each other. They wear a Puppia harness now and often when they are chasing each other and play fighting they bite the other's harness and use it to pull on. I like the Puppia harness, but I think it is too much fabric for them to wear it all day. The Buddy Belt really looks perfect.

The buddy belt does look great!

I would like to just offer one other option - any of Susan Lanci Step-In Dog Harnesses are wonderful and oh so stylish! The website is gwlittle. I have been over the moon happy with mine.

Many colors to choose from soft, very durable, Ultrasuede. Cut to avoid choking and allow freedom of movement. Pretty pricy but seem to be well made and wash well. I hope that helps.

If they are chewers, I wouldn't leave the Buddy Belts on them when they are not supervised. It could end up being an expensive play session. :eek::D

The buddy belt is good, but when Cali is going to have to wear the harness for a while I really like the silk harnesses that ChattiesMom here on YT makes. They are so soft and minimize the matting issues of harnesses - plus the colors are lovely. Like Buddy Belts they get softer as you use them.

Buddy Belt
 
Thank you YorkieMini, I did pm ChattiesMom, but have not heard back from her. I decided to try the Buddy Belt Harness and last week purchased two for my 6 month old puppies. Whoa, what a difference they make in the time it takes to put them on which was one of my concerns, especially in the mornings when they are so anxious to go outside and potty. The harness is the softest leather and the buckle idea is a life saver. They look great on and Anise and Basil already walk into them and I buckle up quickly and off we go! The belts go over their sweaters, as well since there are several eyelets for adjustment. Anise is 7lb and wearing a 3.5, Basil is 10lb and wearing a 4. I am sold on the Buddy Belt! Again, thank you all for posting about harnesses.:)

Bought the Buddy Belts and love them! They are so easy to put on and take off there is no reason to leave them on all day. Thank you!
