Solutions needed: Running with Yorkie Hey all!! Long time no see. :D I'm wondering if anyone has a solution to this question: Kaji and I now live in our own home in the foothills of Los Angeles. (YAY!!) But, the problem is with the new house and a few new circumstances (new job that is farther away) I spend a little less time at home with Kaji. Normally, I would just take him out when running with me, and we'd both get some exercise and spend time together. Well... Kaji has grade 3/4 LPs in both legs. The vet has approved our exercises, and Kaji looks forward to joining me, but the foothills aren't so friendly to his condition. We have some really steep hills in my neighborhood. Just to get home, it's a 5 min climb up from the flattest part of the hill. (not the bottom of the hill, and I hope that made sense) Kaji can run, and keep up, as long as we run on a flat road and it's a short 20-30 min run. I've taken to training for 5k's, now 10k's, and eventually, I'd like to run half marathon lengths. Does anyone know of a way I can brink Kaji with me? Not strollers, but maybe something else? |
I have a stroller that is for runners that I use with Cali. She runs beside me until it is too much fir her, then I pop her in the stroller and we keep going. She loves the stroller and the runs. She is 8 years old with no knee problems, but I am protective. She also runs agility. The one I use is the Pet Gear no zip NZ. It even has an adjustable front wheel for smooth or rougher terrain. |

Congratulations on your new home and your commitment to training/running! Unfortunately, I can't think of any other options than a stroller for Kaji to join you. I wouldn't risk a body type carrier (strapped to you) because that would be a lot of jiggling for his neck while you are running. Bad for the neck. Is there anywhere close by that you could drive to for a flatter surface? I know that is a pain. I have to drive my boys to an area to walk. Our neighborhood has a bad dog situation and also has very steep inclines. |
Thanks!! We love the house and everything still feels new even though we've been here a year. You make a really good point about Kaji possibly hurting his neck. We live smack dab in the middle of the hills. I live on top of a hill. There are hils north, south, east, and west of us. I have to drive at least 15 mins to get to a nice flat road with no major inclines, and not too many cars. Kaji will freak out if we go somewhere with lots of cars and lots of people. My little guy is special. |
Cali did not like the stroller at first. So, I put it next to a chair and sofa she would jump up on, then would put treats in it for her to find. In no time she was begging for the stroller because it meant treats and praise. Noe she also keeps her favorite toys in it. I did start by walking her bad pushing the stroller on the other side. |

And, of course if he is that afraid of the stroller it would be cruel to put him through it. I started Cali young, plus she goes to the assets living place near me where they have walkers and wheelchairs and all that sort of thing so she does not pay that much attention to it- other than to stay out of the way of the motorized ones, she does not like those much, she will sometimes growl at those, I think because they make kind of a high pitched noisy. |

Yea, but that really really builds endurance :D |
I don't have any suggestions for you, but just wanted to say that is wicked awesome you can run such hilly terrain!! You must be in such good health - I'm so envious! I personally don't run, the most I can do is a brisk walk, and only on flat grounds. :D |
Caleb has leg problems too. When we can't take him to a flat area to exercise, we put him on a treadmill. He loves it, both dogs jump on it, when it's off, as if asking for it. Treats are involved. |
