re:Mr. Pooch Hi everyone, It's now almost a month since, Mr. Pooch came into my life and he has brought me great happiness. Still working on the 4:00am sleep issue with him, this morning promptly at that hour he's at the side of my bed scratching it/stretching/shaking for me to get up. Secondly, he doesn't give kisses-all dogs want to kiss you but not Mr. Pooch: Will he start to? Also, when I feed him, he likes to take the food into the living room drop it on the floor and then eat? Is this strange or normal behavior? Finally, he is afraid of other dogs (when walking in the neighbor and another dog is near he start shaking really bad). Will he come around? The squirrels in the backyard have no fear of him, he just looks at them, yesterday a few tiny gold finches landed on the feeder and scared him. Will he become socialized to other dogs and animals? He has yet, to make a sound, no whining or barking. Thanks everyone and have a great weekend. Mr.'s. Ed & Pooch |
Piper isn't big on smooches---as my mom would say, Piper is stingy with giving kisses. And that's fine by me; I'd rather ask for a little lick than have to push her away for too many. I don't think there's any "normal" with our little ones as each seems to possess unique behaviors that may or may not have reasons. As for the fear of other dogs, that could be a result of an attack or lack of socialization. I would take it slow and follow his lead until you can better figure out his fear. After being grabbed by an Akita, Piper gives wide berth to all large dogs--I fully support her in this...Within a few weeks of bringing Piper home, I tried to entice her to play by blowing some bubbles---she took one look, skirted around those floating objects and ran inside! As I said, these little characters have an idiosyncrasy or two, yes?! |

The fear is going to take a loonnnggg time. Hopefully if you continue with your walks and so on he will slowly overcome it. Make going by dogs a treat. Give him treats in he beginning just for doing it. |
Cody is stingy with kisses also, I believe it is training from prev. owner, just like Cody snuggling in bed at night with me. It took 10 months of pulling him close to me, to let him know it's ok to snuggle, NOW, he's the first one to get under the blankets to cuddle lol. I don't think Cody was allowed to kiss his prev.owner. He is getting a wee bit better at letting me smooch his face lol. You only have Mr Pooch a month, you cannot undo in a few months what a dog was taught for years NOT to do, always encourage from him what you want him to do. My girls were horrific kissers, Cody may never be one, I am THRILLED when I get 3 sweet lil licks on my hand lol I praise him like crazy tell him kissy kiss the momma to let him know it's ok to kiss me. Lots of patience is needed with shy rescues. Will Mr Pooch ever get over his fear of dogs, that's hard to say, it's something you have to work on with small gentle dogs. Because my rescue was NOT socialized with dogs I have a NOT dog friendly little guy, and to ME, that is a serious issue. Try taking him to pet shops like Pet Supplies, PetCo, Pet Smart, where there are other dogs trickling in, I suggest a week day where there are not many dogs coming in, you don't want Mr Pooch to get over whelmed with to many dogs in a confined area, I put Cody in the baby seat of a shopping cart and PRAY no one walks down the aisle with a BIG lab lol. Mr Pooch may never have been walked, could be the reason why birds scare him. This is a new WORLD to him. Don't worry about birds and squirrels, give this boy time to adjust to everything. Show him love and kindness which I know that you are, change does NOT come overnight. And YES lol, it's normal for these lil yorkies to take one tiny piece of kibble into another room and eat it, then come back for another tiny kibble and do it again lol,all 4 of my girls did that and so does Cody lol. Lots of patience is needed with this little guy, he needs to learn YOUR way of life and that will take time. |
Thanks so much for your valuable information. Mr.'s. Ed & Pooch |
