1.3 lbs at 5 weeks - is it a healthy puppy weight? The puppy that I picked out is currently 5 weeks and he weighs 1.3lbs. Is this a healthy weight for 5 weeks? I hope he's not going to be too small. He's the smallest out of three pups and his mother is 4 lbs and father is 3.6 lbs. Is he going to reach at least 4lbs? |

Thank you for your reply. According to all charts/calculators he will be more than 4lbs which I'm happy about. But I'm still concerned about his health that's why I was wondering if 1.3 lbs is a healthy puppy weight at 5 weeks. |

My smaller yorkie was just 1 pound at 13 weeks and now (full grown, he will be 2 in May) he is 3.5 pounds. |

I would never buy from a breeder that breeds females under 5 pounds it's very dangerous and shows no care for the breeding female in my opinion. |

Teddy's mom was just over 5 lbs and his dad just over 4 lbs - KC registered etc. Maybe some breeders here would be helpful enough to chime in. My understanding is that mom's under 5 lbs are not to be bred due to the pregnancy being high risk as a result of their small size and that breeders who breed moms under 5 lbs do so to ensure tiny yorkies i.e. just below or over minimum standard of 4lbs. Breeding for 'tiny' instead of within standard is not ethical, due to the danger to the mom, so most here would agree that one should not purchase from a breeder who ignores this recommendation. Did you use the kennel club site for your puppy? Feel free to PM me. There are some KC registered breeders who use other sites and aren't really reputable just like in the US where breeders can be AKC but not reputable. Hope that helps x |

My Gidget weighed 1.9 oz at 6 weeks. Now weighs 5# and have had no health issues with her. She had her 1st birthday last Saturday. |

That's a nice healthy weigh considering that the parents are so tiny. I don't think you will have anything to worry about. |

It's not an unhealthy weight at that age, no. But weight doesn't really indicate health necessarily, either. Make sure you trust the breeder, see the parents/grandparents if possible etc. |

Maybe ask your breeder about their breeding line and estimates? Our breeder, through her experience, was able to estimate the adult weight for us for our puppy, because she knows what her lines tend to do. I mean, that always just an estimate. Good luck with your puppy! |

My girl was only 14.4oz at 8 weeks old. She is now coming up on 6 years old and weighs almost 6lbs. Sometimes you never know. lol |

And don't forget pics!!! I didn't know Teddy before 12 weeks of age but I think he weighed 1lb 8oz until he was about six months old or so and then really took off until he leveled out at 4 lbs 2 oz |

Thank you everyone for your help. It's a really hard when it comes to picking out a yorkie puppy! Never know how what colour/size he'll be when he's fully grown. I'm sure I'll love him anyway. Most importantly that he's healthy and happy. |
