Poop Hello Everyone, Just rescued my Yorkie 10 days ago. No background history on him as he was found as a stray. Have been working on housebreaking. Have pee pads down in the house that he don't use. I walk him what seems like miles everyday and he pees everywhere but no poo. He prefers to poo in the house ? Like I said I walk him at all different times of the day for very long distances and no poo ? Does anyone have an idea I could try ? |
Take him out, let him pee. Bring him back in the house, watch him for signs of getting ready to poop, then rush him back outside to poop. Eventually he will do both outside the first time out. |
Put him on a food and walk schedule. Feed in the morning same time every day, feed at night same time every night. Walk him 30 minutes after he eats both morning and last meal. If he makes in the house before walked, walk him anyway. Amount of time to walk after eating depends on the dog, he may need to go 40 minutes after eating, you will see how long it is, but start at 30 minutes first. In time he will learn what times he goes for walks. Dogs are creatures of habit and have built in alarm clocks. He will learn when it's time he goes out. Consistency and patience are keys factors in any training. You can take him out 4 times a day as long as it is the same time everyday. |
Yes, and to add to the suggestion of a scheduled potty, you can also make a note on what times he has his poop accidents. If you feed at the same time everyday, he might be pooping around the same time. So, that might help to determine what time you should bring him outside. Some dogs are afraid to poop in front of their owners, either just in their nature or because their owners yelled at them during pooping accidents. The first time he poops outside, make sure you give him a big "goooooood boy!!" celebration. And continue to do so every time he poops outside (when he finally does). My two are both outdoor potty trained now, but it still cracks me up that when they poop, they're always giving me eye contact that looks like "mommy look at me...I'm pooping! I'm pooping!". As soon as they're done, I always tell them what a good poop they made! :D |
I adopted my Peek when he was 5 years old, and I was his fourth owner. I watched him in the yard to try to figure out what he was up to. I noticed a pattern after a few days: he would go out and pee in a few spots, but then he became curious about his new surroundings and would forget to poop, until he came back in the house again and settled down. I started to just take him out a second time, because once he came in after the first time, his relaxing triggered his need to poop. Timing is critical, LOL! I tried retraining him like a puppy at first, which didn't work out at all. After two months I decided to just watch him, to try to figure out why he was doing what he was doing. And when he did finally poop outside, the praise party started. Praising a Yorkie will have an exponentially good effect on their behavior over disciplining bad behavior. |
