Rawhide Chews I've heard that they are toxic but others disagree. Should I let my Gidget chew on a rawhide stick? |
I myself would not give my fur kid rawhide chews. My vet told me they cannot digest the pieces and they can get stuck in their intestines. I give mine a nylabone but she only chews it at night on our bed. We watch her and never let her have it alone . When we think it has been chewed on too much we give her a new one and again we watch her. May I am wrong but I hate to see her choking on something . Susan |
What about beefhide twists. Are they safe? |

I don't let my babies have any rawhide...I give them 100% digestible Barkworthies- they love the bully stick pieces the best! |

The nice thing about the Barkworthies is that there are Yorkie sized pieces and there are quite a few in each package. I can usually find them at my local TJ Maxx. |
I don't give any products made in China to my dogs. I only trust products made in Canada or USA and my preference is usually single ingredient products. I also don't give rawhides or bully sticks, no matter where they're made. If you want something for them to chew on, I found a local pet store that sold lamb tails. It's the tail in original form that's been dehydrated with all the cartilage and bones. They LOVED it. There are also dehydrated duck feet and chicken feet. These can be good for them, but also given only on occasion or they might get sick from too much of it. On occasion, I also give Himalayan Cheese Chews and antler chews (though some say that antlers can damage teeth, I didn't have any issues with them). |

Yes, I have heard about others' warnings that antler chews are too hard. I've also read up on the differences between elk and deer antlers too, where one is harder/softer than the other. For my two little ones, I noticed that they use the antlers more for slow grinding rather than direct chomping/chewing. They kind of put their whole body into it, kind of in a thrusting motion. It's hilarious. They particularly like the one that is halved, where they grind into the centre for the bone marrow. Regardless, they get tired of it pretty quick and so far it seems they're pretty picky on chews - if it's too hard, they have zero interest in it. |
I had both a St Bernard and a Yorkie chew on them for awhile, then swallow them whole. Both ended in a trip to the vet. :thumbdown |
