3yr old Yorkie hates new mini schnauzer puppy Hi. I'm new to the group. I have a 3 yr old Yorkie that has such a personality and we love him and have spoiled him rotten. We just got a new mini schnauzer puppy for our daughter and new it would take time but Calvin hates the new puppy and is afraid of her. We thought he would be the aggressor especially because the puppy is very gentle and submissive but he is terrified of her. She runs at him wanting to play and it's completely traumatized him. We are keeping them separate unless we are supervising and he will only come close to her if we are holding her. I know it's going to take time but does anyone think we can encourage him to not be afraid and going a step further, even be dominant? She will back down to him easily but he's laying his ears back and running away. |
Welcome to YT. Calvin is afraid of the puppy most likely because as puppies they do not smell like a DOG, they have a puppy scent which your dog cannot identify. Have no fear, Calvin will adjust to the new kid. Do not force the puppy on Calvin or visa-versa, let Calvin go to the puppy on his time and his terms. Make sure Calvin has a safe haven, a place he can get away from the puppy and feel safe. For my older girls it was the sofa lol. Calvin is not use to a pouncing puppy, it may take up to two months for Calvin to stay on the floor with the baby. I had a pack of 3 females, all 3 years apart all now passed. Each time I would bring a new baby home the older one/ ones would head for the hills (the sofa lol) my girls were very sweet, loving babies, very socialized with ppl and all animals. It took my older girls 2 months to stay on the floor with the wild kid that loved to pounce in the older girls face and nip at their body parts as one of them would pass baby jaws. Take it slow with them, always make Calvin #1, first to be patted when you go out and return home, 1st to get a treat, etc. Calvin doesn't "hate" the puppy, he's just scared of him because he doesn't know it's a DOG lol. You will see, they WILL be BFF, it just takes a little bit of time. |
Thank you so much for the encouragement. Our plan was to get another Yorkie or a mix but we fell in love with the mini schnauzer and came home with her. We've wrestled with regret and being afraid that her size is the problem. They are about the same now, but she will quickly surpass him. He's a small Yorkie, only 5lbs. She will be around 12-15 full grown. Thanks again!! Maybe there is hope. It's only been 3 days. |
I have had two mini schnauzer, not at the same time lol. I had bought a mini schnauzer and a poodle on the same day, they were both 8 weeks old lol. I couldn't make up my mind which one I wanted more, so I bought them both lol, insane? yes lol. .....There are members on YT that have yorkies and MUCH larger dogs...... I had a 6 yo yorkie who lost her older sisters 6 months apart, he grieved for 7 months, she was my little clown, but became very withdrawn when her sisters passed away. I went on a quest to find her a buddy. I found a VERY LARGE 8 week old yorkie, she was going to be a BIG girl, my 6 yo weighed 9 pounds, the new kid as an adult weighed in at 17 pounds, she was VERY gentle with my older one, they played and wrestled but the BIG baby respected my older one and was very gentle with her. Hopefully your schnauzer will be the same. 3 days, that is nothing, you need much more time then just 3 days. Just do NOT force your boy into making friends, let HIM be the judge on that. You say when you hold the puppy he comes and sniffs her, that is a GOOD thing. He will make friends by taking baby steps, let him have this time, you will see, they will be good friends. |
I have a question, because I keep seeing this mentioned. At what age does the puppy scent change to a dog scent? 10-12 months? I'm asking because my two, that generally like dogs, didn't like my friend's puppy, who is about 7 months so I'm wondering if they just have less patience now that they're almost 2 or if it's the puppy scent. |
