New to yorkie talk! Thinking about getting a second yorkie!? :/

Hi there!!

I just joined this group, I had always found so many handy discussions from just googling questions about yorkies that always led me to this website!
So today I decided to join!

So we have a gorgeous 8 month old yorkie named Lucy(pictured in my profile picture).. she is our everything!!
We have the opportunity to add another beautiful fur baby into our world this coming feb... its a boy born on Christmas Eve.

Lucy can growl at other dogs when I show them affection.. will she eventually stop being jealous of this new puppy? Or will she be completely fine when he arrives?? Orrrr will she always be jealous?

And any tips on introducing a new puppy to our lucy?

Please help, I'm worried 😩

Welcome to YT, Lucy at 10 months old is STILL a puppy if you get this other baby. She may be jealous of other dogs on the outside, once the new baby comes home and Lucy sees this kid is here to stay, Lucy will not be with the new baby as she is with those other dogs. She will accept a new puppy faster then an older dog because she is still a puppy her self, they will be BFF fast. If you are not planning on breeding you should get Lucy spayed now and the male neutered when your vet tells you the proper time. At 8 months old if you had no plans of breeding, Lucy should have been spayed 2 months ago before her first heat. Not spaying a female that you are not going to breed is very dangerous to her. Aside from getting mammary tumors there is also Pyometra to be concerned about, that can be fatal. I lost two girls to Pyometra because I didn't have them spayed and I was not planning on breeding them. I would never want anyone to see their babies die before their eyes as I did.

Also thinking of a 2nd Yorkie

How can you have just one? I have an adorable little 6 month old girl who loves every dog she meets. My daughter also has a 2 year old Yorkie and they get to play together a lot, but I am thinking of getting another one of my own. My question is: is a boy a better choice or another girl. Not planning on breeding, just housemates. Any thoughts out there?

I am having kinda the same dilemma. My girl is 2 1/2 When I got her at 5mo I had another little one that I had rescued and she was 9 when she went to Rainbow Bridge due too cancer and diabetes complications. That was this past Sept. Well they never got along. They just learned to respect one anothers space. Since my perfect little Sugar has been gone my Spicey girl LOVES being the only one. I have the chance to get a brand new one once she is completely off her mom and on food etc. which will be the middle of Feb. BUT I am so concerned Spice may hurt her. My Spice is a 7lb girl and this baby will in time get there as she too is not a mini, but I am so afraid in the mean time when I am not looking she may hurt the new one. Not on purpose but enough to let her know she is invading HER home. And we all know how delicate and fragile a little 2-3 lb baby is. Also I will be having the new one on a lead tied to me to train her most of the time or holding her smelling that puppy breath LOL which will make Spice even more jealous. I am thinking of just waiting until one needs rescued or I find one about Spices size and age. What are your thoughts.

I couldnt figure out how to edit but I wanted to add that Lucy is such a cutie and I sure understand what you are feeling on getting another.
Also as Jenna said .....if not breeding very important to have them spayed or neutered! And while they are under have any baby teeth pulled then. Spice was 8mo when I had her spayed and I went back 2 mo later as she needed a few baby teeth pulled. Which since then I have learned thru here it is best to do it at the same time.

Just wanted to say welcome to YT!

On the topic of a dog addition, for us, my min pin hated when I fostered any dogs or had dog guests. It took her about a month to get used to the change in the pack. I had to really watch her to keep her from being mean to the new pup in the house. Maybe you can have a week to try things out and see if all might go well?

Zeus is Loved 01-04-2017 02:08 PM

Our family had Zeus (2 yrs old) a little over a year when we got Perseus (almost 1 year old). It was a pain in the neck, because we had to keep Perseus in an ex-pen to get him potty trained. Zeus did NOT like him at all. Once we let Perseus out of the ex-pen, these two are inseparable. They potty together, eat together, play together, sleep together (with me), and ride in the stroller together. When one has to go to the vet, the other is absolutely beside himself until we get him back. We were so worried Zeus would hate Perseus forever, and it is quite the opposite. As far as boys or girls, you can see that I am definitely partial to boys -- human and canine -- thank goodness I had a son. My son and husband are harping for a girl Yorkie right now, so we'll see.

Welcome to YT! Lucy is adorable!!

From what I've read and my own personal experience, I'd say the best time to add a second puppy is when your first is between 1.5 and 2 years old. The reason being, the first pup has been trained and has settled down into a regular routine - it's less stressful to train one at a time. Then you can focus your attention to training the second puppy. For me, training one at a time was more than enough frustration! Though, I would say that if you want two puppies at the same time, the best is if they came from the same litter.

And yes to Matese's suggestion - make sure you spay and neuter them as soon as they're age-appropriate (I spayed and neutered my two when they were 8 months; they're 1.5 years apart).

I had a pack of 3 females, all 3 years apart. My two older ones was very gentle, very well socialized with ppl and all animals. When I bought home the third baby girl my older ones took to high grounds, the sofa lol. There were terrified of the new baby lol. It took appox. 6 weeks to two months for the older ones to stay on the floor with the wild thing that was always pouncing in their faces or latching on to a tail or a hind leg. They were a loving trio, never a snarl or growl between them. They ate side by side, there were 3 doggie beds but they all piled into one bed. Maybe I was just lucky.

you are doing the right thing for your girl! Adding a second dog will be an adjustment and there will be growls and maybe even some tough moments but in the long run having a sibling is the best socialization ... because growling at others out of jealousy is not nice ;)
When we added our second dog - many years ago I followed the advice of my dog trainer and did not give in to the urge to pamper the new puppy more than my resident dog - I always made sure I pet, fed and loved on my resident dog first and then gave the puppy love. When my dog started showing jealousy I reprimanded him - a short low voice command ( no! ) - as you are the boss and can show affection to anyone you please ( and you pet your dog first !). Now - 13 years later the same two dogs are best friends and inseparable - it is touching how they check up on each other when one is sick- one of them was having a terrible time after surgery and my usually alpha dog let his sick brother eat first and spend hours on me me as if he knew that his friend needed the extra care ....
